Today we will look at the advanced talents we’ve spotted in the prep schools of VA. Starting with some intriguing seniors in the class of 2023.
The widely known, 6’9 big man out of St. Anne’s Belfield is a pure force on the court for opposing big men. Recently recruited by Standford University, Lang is a player who has a ton of success on the court due to his ability to score the ball at such an efficient rate in the stretch big role. Lang put up 18.3 points per game on an insane 60% from the field, along with a staggering 14.9 rebounds. He is a great shooter in the mid-post area as well as from beyond the arc. Lang is an elite screener, he gets great looks for jumpers out of pick and pop actions, and it’s an automatic 2-points when he rolls to the basket. His high-level rebounding comes from a mix of his motor, his strength, and the ability to get off of the ground with quickness and repetitiveness when battling on the boards. Lang is also an elite playmaker in the high post and low post areas as never fails to reward the cutters with picture-perfect passes. This upcoming season Lang will continue to showcase his dominance on the court for STAB and will be a player to keep your eye on for years to come.
Also out of St. Anne’s Belfield, the 6’2 guard, John St. Germain John St. Germain 6'2" | PG St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State VA contributed 16.8 points, 4.3 assist, 4 rebounds and 2 steals a night for STAB. He is an extremely shifty guard who uses a variety of hesitations and crossovers to break down his defenders and get to the paint at will. St. Germain has a great feel for the game and knows how to capitalize on his abundant paint touches. He attacks with his head up scanning for open teammates and always delivers a great assist when he gets the defense to react and collapse. This guy is a very high-level finisher around the rim, he can navigate his way through the lane and he uses his body properly when attacking, anticipates the contact, and absorbs it. On the defensive end, he gives you everything you could ask for from a guard with his lightening quick hands and anticipation when playing off the ball.
Highlights
At 6’9, Smith is a player who excels at scoring the ball from all 3 levels. Smith can be effective anywhere from under the basket to beyond the 3-point line where he can hit a variety of tough jumpers. He is an advanced scorer when operating in the low post, he often has the size advantage but his strength and mobility is the biggest key to his offensive success. He loves making plays using his swift passing skills with great transition passes and punishing the defense when they over-commit to him. Smith is a lockdown rim protector, he has a high defensive IQ making it rare for opposing players to get off good looks around him.
The 6’6 sharpshooter has deep range with a great consistent shot form to go with it at the wing spot. The younger brother of Texas A & M’s forward, Henry Coleman III, Leland has a very promising game. Coleman is way more than just a threat from the perimeter, he is a menace to the court from out there. At 6 foot 6 when Coleman gets the pass for a catch-and-shoot shot, he can convert at a high percentage due to his great positional size, length, and ability to rise above defenders to get his shots off. When Coleman attacks the paint from the top of the key, he does so with great intent. He can finish through contact and has the footwork to maneuver his way through the lane for a finish at the basket.
The knockdown shooter out of St. Christopher’s in Richmond, Virginia operates with good strength when he puts the ball on the floor and is very competitive. Youngkin has great court vision in transition and is great at delivering live dribble passes accurately. At 6 foot 4, Youngkin is a very versatile player who can play positions 1-3 and maybe even the 4. He utilizes his size to rise and fire over guys and punish smaller defenders in the paint. Youngkin is a high IQ player with a good feel for the game, on the offensive end, as well as the defensive end of the court. He never seems sped up with the ball in his hands and he always takes the right shot.
