The Gamepoint Fall HS Showcase has been perennially one of the top team preseason showcases in Southern California, giving this writer and coaches an opportunity to evaluate both teams and talent in advance of the high school season.

This year, the 14th installment, was one of the best to date.

I had a chance to watch games on each of the three days (Sunday I split my time between the showcase and the Pangos Frosh/Soph Camp), and in the first of my reports, I will talk about the next 10 performances on hand based on the games I watched. Key phrase: I WATCHED.

[player_tooltip player_id='1434840' first='Thomas' last='Metcalf'], 6-4 2023 WF, Mission Bay

The clubhouse leader for "most improved senior" in San Diego is Metcalf, whose ball skills and shooting have made another leap since the summer. Throughout the weekend he hit baseline shots from midrange off the catch at an almost automatic clip, and looked comfortable attacking the basket from the wing and handling it out on the perimeter. Coupled with his excellent motor, rebounding and defense, and Metcalf looks primed for a breakout senior year.

Kalik Sharpe, 5-11 2023 G, Balboa

The explosive New York transfer point guard delivered one of the weekend's highlights when he broke a press and dunked over 7-0 Pepperdine commit [player_tooltip player_id='994931' first='Martin' last='Gumwel'], but Sharpe's game is more than just that highlight. A compact guard with great burst and athleticism, he is an imposing on-ball defender who picks up the ball full court and on offense he is a strong slasher who can get into the paint and finish through - and over - contact.

Loren Daniel, 6-1 2023 G, Balboa

One of the top shooters in the gym, Daniel knocked down an array of jump shots from three and midrange. He's the Bengals most reliable offensive player and allows the bigs to have space to operate because of his shooting threat. Daniel moves well without the ball to find openings, and is always shot ready. He does a solid job of attacking closeouts and getting to his spots in the midrange.

Jake Hall, 6-3 2025 G, Carlsbad

Hall is one of the more polished scoring threats on hand, both from the perimeter (knockdown shooter off the catch) and from inside the three point line. A crafty and strong combo guard who uses change of pace and physicality to get to his spots from close and midrange, Hall also showed off his passing chops once the double team arrived, making some high-level reads to weak side shooters.

Alek Sanchez, 6-3 2025 G, Montgomery

The 6-3+ combo guard has elite vision and feel, and delivered some impressive assists in the half court and transition. Sanchez's length and activity level make him a disruptive defender in the Aztecs' zone trap defense, where he gets a number of deflections and steals. One of his gifts is his pace. You rarely see Sanchez get sped up and he dictates the pace of the game at the point guard position. While not the scorer that his twin brother JJ is, Sanchez does a good job drawing fouls on drives and lives at the foul line.

[player_tooltip player_id='994915' first='Derrius' last='Carter-Hollinger'], 6-6 2023 F, St. Augustine

Carter Hollinger is an underrated piece of what St. Augustine has accomplished since his transfer from Foothills Christian in 2021, but this weekend, with two starters out, we got to see Carter-Hollinger be more assertive offensively than we have in a while. And the results were largely positive. A long, rangy forward who can score it in the paint and off the bounce, Carter-Hollinger is also an unselfish passer and playmaker out of the post and midrange. Defensively, his motor, length and lateral quickness allow him to switch 1-5 at the high school level, a skill set that will serve him well at NAIA power Arizona Christian, where he recently committed.

[player_tooltip player_id='994955' first='Kollen' last='Murphy'], 6-3 2023 G, Rancho Christian

If Lolo Rudolph was the fastest guard at the showcase, Murphy, a transfer from Ontario Colony, was a close second. Murphy has elite burst in the open court and his first step leaves defenders in the dust in the half court. When he's under control, the lefty gets to his spots in the paint and finishes with a nice array of runners and floaters. Defensively, he has lockdown perimeter defender written all over him. In order for him to maximize his physical gifts (length, elite quickness) on the offensive end, Murphy must play with better pace and learn to change speeds.

[player_tooltip player_id='994926' first='Angelo' last='Gil'] , 6-0 2023 G, San Ysidro

With San Ysidro down 4 rotation players most of the weekend, Gil took advantage of the spotlight, scoring from all three levels and doubling as a very good passer and creator off the bounce. He's playing with better control off the bounce, getting on balance, which allows him to see the floor better off the dribble. It's still hard to believe that at this stage, his lone offer is NAIA school Ottawa University (AZ).

[player_tooltip player_id='994912' first='Christian' last='Brown'], 6-5 2023 WF, La Costa Canyon

Brown has three very high level skills as a prospect. He is a fairly knockdown shooter off the catch, especially from the wings and top of the key, he rebounds it assertively on both ends, at a much high rate than you'd expect at his size, and his motor is nonstop. He keeps it simple, and his game is productive and effective as a result.

[player_tooltip player_id='994935' first='Ty' last='Hendler'], 6-3 2023 G, La Costa Canyon

Hendler is blossoming into one of San Diego's best scoring guards, using his size at the guard position, craftiness and touch to score via floaters off the bounce and pull-up jump shots out of the pick-and-roll set. He's not afraid to get into the paint and absorb contact, finishing at a solid clip around the bucket. His range extends out to beyond the college three, but an area where improvement will only make him a better scorer is playing off of two feet, as he has a tendency to take a lot of off-balance shots with mixed results.
