Continue ReadingOn Monday, I got the chance to sit in on BFL’s first practice of the year. Outside of one lone returner, it was an all new group of recruits (many with D-1 potential), coming in locally and from around the country to play with Prep in upcoming season on the Grind Circuit, which starts in early November. At first glance, the squad revealed their blend of individual talent and what they can bring to the table as a unit, here are my top standouts from Day 1:
William Lobor
William Lobor
One of coach Barry Jones’ newest additions toward the tail end of the summer was adding 6-foot-7 ‘do-it-all’ wing Will Lobor out of Portland, Maine. Will is strong and physical and gets after it on both ends of the court. His energy level was impressive all practice and he got to many of the loose balls during boxout drills and in scrimmages. He has all the tools to guard 1-through-5 at a very high level, finish around the rim while attacking and is an excellent playmaker in the halfcourt, especially. He figures to be one of the team leaders moving forward and should make a bunch of noise for the Kings.
Offers: Iowa State, Murray State, Missouri State.
Interest: Washington, Arizona State, Northern Arizona.
Tre Washington
Tre Washington
An athletic, powerful above the rim finisher and glass eater, Tre Washington definitely fits the bill of a tough and rugged power forward. The senior from Jersey is a beast in the paint and a name to remember when the season starts. He has the physicality and upper body strength to be a major problem underneath for opposing forwards and bigs his size. He is spry with a quick second and even third jump on the boards and embraces finishing through contact.
Offers: Western Illinois, Rhode Island, Northern Arizona, Texas State.
Katrelle Harmon
Katrelle Harmon
One of the most promising local young prospects in the state and BFL Prep’s only returning player, freshman Katrelle Harmon had a standout summer playing on the Grind Circuit, showing how dynamic of a player he can be and racking up big Division 1 interest. At 6’3 with a 6’8 wingspan, his length allows him to do a variety of things on the court well. His feel for the game is well above most kids his age. He can knock down jumpers, create in the lanes, and knows when to dish it off to his teammates. Defensively, when he uses his long arms he can impact passing lanes incredibly effectively.
Offers: Seattle University, Washington, University of San Francisco, Oregon State.
Interest: Xavier, Kentucky, California, Duke.
Fresh off a breakout junior year at Kamiak, the 4A Wesco 1st Team selection showed a ton of potential as a long two-way slashing wing and will instead be playing for BFL Prep this upcoming season. He seemed to fit right in alongside the other Kings’ perimeter players in the first practice and showed what he can bring to the table with his all around skillset. Josiah plays with a nice intensity on the defensive end and is great at staying vertical and altering shots when players drive at him. He has midrange and 3-point shooting ability and is a player who uses his 6’5 frame to get inside, scoring or finding open cutters. Since watching him play for the first time early last season, its evident that he’s added a bit of muscle and that should serve him well against opponents who match up with him at the next level.

Highlights
Alex Barber
Alex Barber
Barber is an interesting prospect and one of the most intriguing players on the roster this year. standing 6-foot-6, he has a really high ceiling with how quick he is in transition with the ball. His long strides really help him move up the floor in a blur and he has crafty moves and playmaking ability on the break. He can get all the way to the cup, or find spot up shooters around him. There is a lot to like with the Hartford, Connecticut product, and he’ll be an exciting watch throughout the season as he continues to grow.
Offers: U Mass, Temple, Providence, Bryant.
Dylan Williams
Dylan Williams
One of my favorite players I got to watch on Monday was Dylan Williams. He’s a quality guard people are starting to take note of, and for good reason. The Surrey, BC native moved over from Canada to attend BFL Prep this season and is a solid PG that helps fill out this roster. He’s a shifty ballhandler who loves to get inside the paint and make plays. He has a tight handle when setting up the offense and uses his lateral speed on defense to stay in front of other guards. He’s received a lot of D-2 interest from around the state so far.
Offers: Seattle Pacific, Western Washington, Central Washington.
