Check out my analysis on the kids who have really popped this summer off of their downright dominant performances at tournaments all across the state of Texas. I got a chance to travel all around Texas in search of the next great prospects all summer, and I am excited for you guys to follow along and check out my analysis.

[player_tooltip player_id="1211673" first="Matthew" last="Gonzalez"] 2023 6'0 Marshall High School (DC Kings SA 17U)

Matthew is one of the best scorers in Texas with his ability to flat out dominate from all levels of the floor, yet what sets him apart from other scorers is his natural point guard instincts and incredibly tight handle. You can tell he has spent countless hours working on tightening up his handle, using it to routinely get around his opponents and force a second defender to come up and react. I was very impressed with his ability to make good decisions while still going top speed hurling into the paint. When he gets downhill, defense do not know what to do with him as he scores so easily from the mid-range and as he attacks the rim. However his best plays for his teammates are often made with him getting to the rack, and finding an open teammate on the back side of the play. His scoring prowess is going to make him a household name in the San Antonio area with how easily he gets it done beyond the arc. He is a complete four level scorer with the ability to threaten the defense from beyond the three point line. His aggressiveness lets him hunt for his shot, yet his consistency is such a difference maker. Gonzalez is a name you cannot soon forget, and if you are in the San Antonio area, be sure to get out to a game of his next season, you will not be disappointed!

[player_tooltip player_id="959231" first="Sterling" last="Butler"] 2023 5'9 Mansfield High School (ASAK 17U Elite)

Sterling is a coach's dream for an undersized point guard. He was a true on the court leader and created a plethora of open looks for his teammates. He is quick and thrives at beating defenders off the dribble and getting into the lane. He has great court vision, and used that to set up his teammates in the full court with ease. He is unselfish and loves seeing his teammates succeed and knows how to change the momentum in the game with his ability to throw lobs and shoot off the bounce. His legs are very strong, and he seems to explode to the rim. I was very impressed with his natural ability to finish amongst bigger defenders. He is agile and seems to zip all around the court and wreak havoc. He has a nonstop motor that allows him to compete at the highest level on both ends of the court. He moves his feet well to cut off angles of his opponent and really got under their skin when he was on the court. I would like to see him work on his ability to control the tempo over the game and work on not getting sped up into bad looks.

[player_tooltip player_id="1153456" first="AaShon" last="Holmes"] 2023 6'1 San Antonio Harlan High School, TX (San Antonio King Hoops 2023)

Aashon is a complete three level scorer who is a real threat every time he comes into the half court. I was blown away by his shot making ability off the bounce, and he dazzled and danced around his defenders with a live dribble. His creative handle allows him to get anywhere he wants on the court. He can control the tempo of the game like a point guard and is great at changing his speed to keep his defenders off balance. He lives in the paint off of his ability to get around defenders, and is a very consistent finisher in the paint. He knows how to use every inch of the floor to his advantage, he is aware and knows which dribble moves he can use to create space on the baseline or the sideline. He was a show every time he finished on the break as well, he is a beast going coast to coast! Holmes is a real threat to score and manipulate the defense in whatever way he wants.

[player_tooltip player_id="1454870" first="Camren" last="Roper"] 2023 6'1 Steele High School (SA ProSkills 17U Black)

Camren is an athletic point guard who has really developed since the last time I have seen him, especially with his consistency from beyond the arc. He is great at getting to his shot off the bounce in the mid-range, but really affects this game with his nonstop energy on both ends of the court. He seems to have grown a bit since the last time I saw him in action, with his long arms still affecting every aspect of the game. He is an aggressive defender who thrives on that end of the floor. He is great at playing the passing lanes and coming up with steals in transition. He is aggressive when guarding on the perimeter and really seems to man up in the paint and can protect the rim.

Andrew Huntley 2023 6'0 Juan Seguin High School (Dallas Mustangs 17U)

Andrew is a high level combo guard who showed an ability to carry his team's offense and score from all three levels of the floor. I was very impressed with the prowess he displayed with his ability to score off the bounce. He is a sharp shooting guard who can catch and shoot or make the right decision to put the ball on the floor and attack the rim. His ability to score amongst taller defenders was very impressive, using floaters and elusive euro steps to get around his opponents. He made the defense pay and kept them on their heels with his ability to get by his on ball defender and score in the paint or draw a second defender to make the right read. I would like to see him continue to work on his decision making out of the pick and roll and controlling the half court offense with a live dribble.

Check out my analysis on the kids who have really popped this summer off of their downright dominant performances at tournaments all across the state of Texas. I got a chance to travel all around Texas in search of the next great prospects all summer, and I am excited for you guys to follow along and check out my analysis.
