AIM Sportsplex in Seal Beach, CA played host to the West Coast Classic held from July 6-10. The event featured teams from Northern and Southern California as well as from out of state. I was able to attend the event on Saturday, July 9 and I focused on the CA teams. Here’s a look at some additional standouts that I saw.
1. Prince Okonkwu – WCE 15U Valley Johnson
Okonkwu started out the game I saw a little bit slow but picked it up as the game went on especially finishing at the rim. He has good size and the tools to become an effective big man at the high school level. He has a soft touch around the rim. He moves well, has good hands to catch passes and makes strong cuts to the rim. He’s a very good offensive rebounder to keep possessions alive and get put-backs. He can also draw contact and get to the free-throw line where he does need to improve his shooting a bit.
2. Brennan Woodley – Redwood 2025/NBBA 15U
Woodley stood out as a very good scoring guard in the game I saw. He has a nice first step and he also uses shot fakes at the three-point line to get to the rim. Really good shooter from distance especially on catch and shoot threes; does a good job relocating. He has strong handles and is able to break down the defense off the dribble. When he gets into the lane, he is able to draw the defense and kick the ball back out to open teammates. Good defender on ball.
3. Vieux Sanneh – Palmdale 2024/WCE 15U Valley Johnson
This was my second time seeing Sanneh play and what really stood out this time was his defense. He’s a good shot blocker for a wing; he times himself well and elevates with the shooter. On ball, he slides his feet well and forces the ball-handler to pick up the dribble. Offensively, he is comfortable with the ball in his hands. Does a good job driving baseline and being able to finish at the rim. Can shoot the ball a bit too.
4. Davion Johnson – Riverside Poly 2022/Redlands Showtime (Boys Open)
Johnson was a solid point guard who controlled the pace of the game. He’s a good ball-handler who can break down the defense off the dribble. He can shoot pull-up threes in transition and he can knock down catch and shoot threes in the halfcourt. He does a good job getting to the rim, but isn’t always able to finish well. He is able to draw contact though and get himself to the free-throw line. Can find the open teammate in the halfcourt.
