The talent was stacked in Kansas City for the Prep Hoops NEXT National Championship.
Each division was full of talented prospects and teams that played extremely well together. I spent some time focused on the 12U teams and narrowed down the athletes who stood out most over the weekend. Below are a few of the standouts and what they brought to the court in Kansas City.
Jason White | Kessel Heat
White may have been the hardest working prospect I watched compete all weekend. He is a hustler! He filled the lanes well for his team allowing for others to make an impact as well. His ability to finish with contact was impressive.
Soane Hola | Team Ferrari
Hola is a patient paint presence! He showed a high understanding of how to use his body inside. He was consistent on the free throw line in the clutch. The ceiling is high for Soane as he plays much bigger than he is already – as he continues to grow he’ll be even more dominant.
Jason White | Kessel Heat
White is a hustler! He filled the lanes well for his team allowing for others to make an impact as well. His ability to finish with contact was impressive.
Ira Thomas | Team Illinois
Thomas is notorious for an impressive downhill attack and a soft touch around the rim. It was nearly impossible all weekend. In addition, he has a next-level handle and a quick first step. Made big-time plays for Team Illinois!
Marlon Williams | Kessel Heat
Williams is a shifty prospect at the lead guard position. Most noticeable is his pace on both ends of the floor. He is rarely rattled and has elite court vision offensively. I was most impressed by his ability to make instinctive plays after drawing help defenders.
Mason Williams | Kessel Heat
The Kessel Heat standout is a shifty lead guard. He’s the difference-maker on this team as he controls the tempo on both ends of the floor. He is patient, versatile around the rim, and the anchor on this team’s full-court press.
Demetrius Williams | Team Tyus
Williams played with great pace and tenacity on both ends. I really liked his ability to remain upbeat under pressure. His activity was impactful in pretty much every category.
MJ Boyd | Team Ferrari
An extremely wiry guard who showed a smooth midrange pull-up. He had a natural playmaking ability that was exciting to watch.
