The three-day event was held at Bishop Gorman high school in Las Vegas, NV, and featured many of the top basketball media professionals and NBA scouts courtside. The overall camp MVP was Xavier Booker of Cathedral (IN) while Tru Washington Tru Washington 6'3" | CG AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State #61 Nation AZ of Mountain Pointe (AZ) and Baye Fall of Accelerated Schools (CO) took home the Top 30 game co-MVPs.
In this piece, I give my first five performers from the event. Remember, these five players are hand selected based on how I viewed them live at the event and put together in a way that would allow that specific team to play in a real game.
G Aden Holloway Aden Holloway 5'11" | PG Sussex Hamilton | 2023 #60 Nation CA-N , La Lumiere (IN) – Holloway is a crafty, smart and well-paced point guard who did a nice job of creating shots for teammates while also proving he can get a basket in a variety of ways when needed. The 6-footer gets defenders off-balance with his tight handle and creativity with the ball, and, once he spots an opening, he can get downhill quickly for paint touches resulting in a soft-touched floater or drive and kick opportunity for a teammate.
G Johnuel Fland Johnuel Fland 6'2" | PG Stepinac | 2024 State #13 Nation NY , Archbishop Stepinac (NY) – Better known as “Boogie,” Fland lives up to the nickname with his quickness and shiftiness in the open floor to go along with his ability to fill it up from three-point range. The 6-foot-2, class of 2024 combo guard, plays with a feel and IQ well-beyond his 15 years of age as he just has a knack for the ball whether it’s scoring or distributing. Fland’s go-to on the offensive end is his three-ball which he can hit with deep range and doesn’t need much time or space to get his shot off.
G/F Marvel Allen Marvel Allen 6'4" | SG Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian | 2023 State #46 Nation FL , Montverde Academy (FL) – Allen is great when getting downhill in transition or half-court situations as his combination of strength and athleticism allowed him to bully his way to the basket and finish through or above contact. The 6-foot-4 rising senior isn’t just a bully-ball guy, however, as he can knock down catch-and-shoot or off-the-bounce threes and utilizes an effective shot fake to dribble into his balanced mid-range jumper.
G/F Tru Washington Tru Washington 6'3" | CG AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State #61 Nation AZ , Mountain Pointe (AZ) – Washington can play multiple positions because of his size, length, athleticism and ability to guard the 1 through 3 spots on the floor. The high motor lefty didn’t need the ball in his hands to be effective as his willingness to run the floor and off-ball movement resulted in easy buckets in the painted area. When on the ball, Washington is adept at driving and finishing at the rim or knocking down three-point shots when defenders go under the ball screen.
C jackson James jackson James 5'11" | CG Waconia | 2024 MD , West Nottingham Academy (MD) – Any big man who has the motor and desire to dominate in camp setting like this will make an impact in one way or another and Missi’s impact was felt on both ends of the floor. The 6-foot-10 center contested and changed shots around the basket, snatched up defensive rebounds, threw a quick outlet pass to guards and ran the floor hard for transition baskets. While still very raw from a skill-set standpoint, Missi has things you can’t necessarily teach in his fluid athleticism, good hands and feet and timing as a rim protector.
