On June 9th-11th I attended the 15th annual Best in Basketball Summer Invitational at Mesquite HS. 24 teams from around the state competed for the three days. There were 22 AIA teams with two prep teams.

In this article we look at the 2nd team All-Invitational from the weekend.

[player_tooltip player_id="814507" first="Davion" last="Butler"] McClintock

A strong and tough lead guard will fight his opponents up the court. His catch three has become a weapon. He made big shot after big shot. He is a fierce competitor and despite his size, he is tough as they come. The shot maker will also burst by after a ball fake and then uses his speed and handle.

[player_tooltip player_id="1485864" first="Justin" last="Garcia"] Campo Verde

Is Garcia the top shooter that no one knows of yet? Maybe. He is one of those players that you may not say off the top of your head but he is way up there for the states best catch three point shooters in the AIA. He always seems like he gets a clean look and has a quick trigger to go with it. He squares to the basket like you should and plays with a huge IQ. He also can get a step on his defender and score it on layups and floaters.

[player_tooltip player_id="1275632" first="Lex" last="Clontz"] Cesar Chavez (Pictured)

Clontz has a clip from deep. He has a clean pull-up off the dribble from mid to the three point line and gets hot very quickly. Against the talented McClintock team, he lit them up with deep bombs one after another. He also is playing a lot of lead guard and makes smart decisions with the ball, as he is expanding his game.

[player_tooltip player_id="996161" first="Lashy" last="Perez"] Apollo

A natural scoring guard who has become a real point guard. He can drive and kick it to an open shooter, dime a cutter, or burst by and drop it off to a post player. He can catch and shoot from the three point line and he has some flash to his game. He made a few impeccable passes with great timing.

[player_tooltip player_id="1333492" first="Michael" last="Simcoe"] Sandra Day O’Connor

The big man has made strides since last year. He is a three level scorer as he can step out to the three point line, use the drop step, hit from mid and flush it down way above the rim. He is patient in the post and when he gets double teamed, he will find the open teammate. He definitely backed up his ranking.

[player_tooltip player_id="831120" first="Seydou" last="Tamboura"] St. Mary’s

A powerfully built forward is a natural rim runner and shot blocker. He was the top interior defender of the 24 teams. He moves well in space and will alter or block shots near him. He runs the court well and he is using his left hand way better then in the past. He is currently playing through a broken hand until after the live period and should be ready for the AIA season.

[player_tooltip player_id="937203" first="Kolin" last="J. Vance"] Paradise Valley

An explosive southpaw seems to glide in the air. He has supreme length and is a natural athlete who runs well. He gets most of his points from inside but he is a quick second jumper and leaps up to grab rebounds and gets second chance points often. The sky is the limit for him. Once he fills in and gets more shooting reps, watch out.

[player_tooltip player_id="1217315" first="TayVion" last="Wilson"] Kellis

The young sniper for the Cougars is a fun watch. He has video game like three point range with a quick trigger and has a swagger about him. He can find teammates and changes speeds plus he will create his own offense when needed be.

(I will talk about the 3rd team All-Invitational in the next article.)
