The 2022 North Dakota State Track & Field Meet took place May 26th through the 28th in Bismarck at the beautiful MDU Resources Community Bowl. Class A & B compete at the same venue on the same days. In this article, we are focusing on Class B. Look below for the top 5 team scores from State. We will also tell you how these basketball players did at the State T&FMeet and then make a few comments on them as basketball players. Congratulations to everyone on a great Track & Field season!

Team Standing Class B

1st - Kindred, 124.5 points (STATE CHAMPIONS)

2nd - Bowman County, 95 points

3rd - Harvey/Wells County, 66 points

4th - Central Cass, 59 points

5th - Hazen, 56 points

STATE B TRACK & FIELD - Basketball Standouts

[player_tooltip player_id="812227" first="Paul" last="Olson"] (2022) |6’3 SF| Kindred

400 Meter Dash (1st) 49.98 - High Jump (1st) 6-6 - 200 Meter (2nd) 27.77 - 100 Meter (3rd) 11.57

He led the Vikings to a Region 1 Championship and an appearance in the State Championship game. Olson was an All-Region and 2nd Team All-State selection. Take a look at Olson’s numbers this season: 14.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.1 bpg, 61.5% FG, 28% 3FG, and 68% FT. Paul was one of the most exciting players in ND to watch this year. Olson was a high-flying act that seemed to dunk more than anything. His 2-handed SLAMS and alley-oop finishing were amazing!

[player_tooltip player_id="1123710" first="Jaiden" last="Peraza"] (2022) |6’5 PF| Kindred

200 Meter Dash (1st) 22.71 - 400 Meter Dash (5th) 50.95 - High Jump (2nd) 6-6

He was an All-Region 1 player and he was a major part of the Kindred Region 1 Championship. He was also vital in the Vikings run to the State Championship game. Peraza is a special and strong athlete. He stood out as a physical rebounder, and tough defender, and a powerful finisher. Don’t forget about all his rim-rocking dunks! He and Olson were a scary 2-headed monster that few could contend with. Peraza was a beast on the hardwood!

[player_tooltip player_id="1123709" first="Jake" last="Deutsch"] (2022) |6’1 SG| Central Cass

100 Meter Dash (8th) 11.74 - 200 Meter Dash (9th) 23.48 - 4x100 (1st) 44.10 - 4x200 (1st) 1:31.89

This Squirrel was a star in multiple sports. Deutsch took 3rd in State wrestling. Jake competed at a high level in football, wrestling, basketball, and track & field. Deutsch will be taking his talents west on I-94 about 40 miles to play football at Valley City State. In hoops, Deutsch was instrumental and a valuable player for CC. The Squirrels were ranked in the Top 10 for much of the season, Deutsch was a heavy contributor with his hard work and athleticism.

[player_tooltip player_id="1050257" first="Tyson" last="Enget"] (2023) |5’11 PG| Powers Lake

200 Meter Dash (6th) 23.34

He was selected as an All-Region 8 Player and a First Team All-State player. Making First Team All-State is a huge deal, Enget is a complete STUD! Tyson’s numbers from this season looked like this: 25 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 4.9 apg, 5 spg, 49 FG%, and 27 3FG%. He also led his team to an impressive 23-1 record. Enget will be one of the top players in ND next season and will be one of the favorites to be named a Mr. Basketball candidate.

[player_tooltip player_id="1318558" first="Evan" last="Richman"] (2022) |6’2 F| Maple River

100 Meter Dash (9th) 11.77

He was an All-Region 1 player this season as a senior. Richman plays with a physical presence and contact around the lane does not phase him. Evan is a nice athlete that jumps well and runs fast up and down the court. He was a solid rebounder and he scores well around the basket. Richman helped protect the rim for Maple River. His toughness and grit will be missed by the Raiders.

[player_tooltip player_id="1144605" first="Jake" last="Shobe"] (2024) |6’0 G| Dickinson Trinity

400 Meter Dash (2nd) 50.67 - 4x200 Meter Relay (2nd) 1:32.08

He helped the Titans get to the Region 7 Championship game and Jake averaged 16.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 3.1 apg, and 3.5 spg. He was also an All-Region 7 selection. Jake is a stout defender and athletic all-around player. On offense, this lefty is a sniper from beyond the arc. He has all the skills that you could ask for and Shobe is a smart cutter. He is very talented. Shobe is playing AAU basketball with ND Attack. Jake will be one of the best players in Region 7 once again next season.

Ty Giroux (2022) |6’4 F| Standing Rock

110 Meter Hurdles (3rd) 16.08 - 300 Meter Hurdles (8th) 43.18

Like anyone that places at State in the hurdles, Giroux is an excellent athlete. He was also a standout on the basketball court. Giroux jumps well and he has an impressive vertical. His spin-move is scary and tough to handle for any defender. Ty blocked a ton of shots and protected the rim. On offense, Giroux scored the rock from inside and out.

[player_tooltip player_id="1144932" first="Bohden" last="Duffield"] (2024) |6’1 G| Bowman County

Long Jump (5th) 20:9.50 - 4x100 Meter Relay (7th) 45.28 - 4x200 Meter Relay (5th) 1:32.85

He was the leading producer for the Region 7 Champs from Bowman. Bohden had a monster season and averaged 20.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.5 apg, and 3.0 spg. Duffield was selected as a 2nd Team All-State Player in Class B. This kid can get hot in a hurry and take over the game. He is a pure scorer and a gifted athlete.

[player_tooltip player_id="1144931" first="Bishop" last="Duffield"] (2024) |6’1 G| Bowman County

Triple Jump (7th) 14-01.25 - 4x200 Meter Relay (5th) 1:32.85

He helped his squad win the Region Championship and a trip to the State Tournament. Bishop is a hardworking athlete and a physical defender. He has the ability to go off on the offensive end and he can score from deep in a hurry. Duffield will never take a play off and he knows the game well.

[player_tooltip player_id="1138800" first="Rylee" last="Bakkegard"] (2023) |5’10 SG| Oak Grove

4x200 Meter Relay (8th) 1:34.16

I watched him against Thompson this winter and Bakkegard helped the Grovers take down the #6th ranked team in Class B at the time. His pull-up game was on-point that night. Bakkegard was feeling it! He plays hard and rebounds well for a guard. He is not just a scorer, Rylee can pass and set up others as well. Bakkegard will be ready for a big senior season next year.

[player_tooltip player_id="1133069" first="Trevon" last="Rodriguez"] (2022) |5’11 PG| Oak Grove

Long Jump (7th) 20-5.75 - 4x200 Meter Relay (8th) 1:34.16

He was an All-Region 1 selection this season. Rodriguez has also been named to the Lions All-Star game that will be played this summer. Trevon is quick, speedy, and fast. He had one of the best pull-up jumpers that I saw in North Dakota this past year. Rodriguez was a sticky and tough on-ball defender. He was also a team player and a creator for others.

[player_tooltip player_id="1130544" first="Parker" last="Gallagher"] (2022) |5’10 G| Hillsboro/Central Valley

Pole Vault (1st) 13-00 - 4x200 Meter Relay (9th) 1:35.06

He was a stud in football, basketball, and track. Parker was an All-State football player and now he is a State Champion in the Pole Vault! Gallagher is a versatile athlete that can do a bit of everything. Parker was a hard worker on both ends of the basketball court. He can also knock down the perimeter and mid-range jumper.

[player_tooltip player_id="1219808" first="Caden" last="Englund"] (2024) |6’0 G| Shiloh Christian

4x400 Meter Relay (8th) 8:47.38

I have watched him play a few times this spring and Englund is a very nice athlete. Carter plays AAU ball with ND Phenom and they have a tough squad. I have watched many athletic and agile finishes from the Shiloh Christian kid. He hits the boards hard and he is not afraid to dive onto the floor to grab a loose ball. He is an unselfish passer with good basketball instincts. Englund is a stock rising youngster to keep your eyes on.

[player_tooltip player_id="1159611" first="Leighton" last="Strommen"] |6’3 G| Northern Cass

High Jump (8th) 6-0

He was an All-Region 1 selection. Strommen stats this season looked like this: 10.3 ppg, 2.9 apg, 6 rpg, and 59 FG%. I like Leighton’s game, he is a big guard that can score from all 3-levels. Strommen loves the game of basketball and he is always improving. Strommen is a tough matchup with his length and skill. Leighton is also a nice athlete, he can get up and finish above the rim in impressive fashion. He will be playing college ball at Crown College next year.

Alex Erickson (2022) |6’4 F| Harvey/Wells County

Long Jump (1st) 21-8.50 Triple Jump (1st) 42-03 High Jump (9th) 5-10

This kid is a special athlete. When I watched Erickson play in the basketball season he impressed me with a slam dunk. I thought he was just going in for a layup, instead, Erickson went up for the WHAM! Alex worked hard on the offensive glass, hustled all over the court, and contested everything. Erickson had quite the end to his senior year in Track and Field!

[player_tooltip player_id="1218749" first="Riley" last="Sunram"] (2024) |6’4 PF| Kindred

Shot Put (2nd) 54-04

He is a strong, tough, and big player that is not afraid of contact. Riley provides rim/lane protecting and consistent rebounding. Sunram was a key cog in the mighty Vikings run to the Region 1 Championship and the State Championship game. Expect Sunram to be a major player for Kindred next year, the Vikings lose a good amount of talent and Riley will step right in. Sunram is looking like a D1 football and shot put college prospect.

[player_tooltip player_id="1318349" first="Caleb" last="Olson"] (2022) |6’3 PF| Lisbon

Discus Throw (5th) 141-04 - Shot Put (8th) 49-05

He was an All-Region 1 basketball player two years in a row. Olson is a big, burly, beast around the basket. He moves very well for his size. Caleb is a load to handle in the lane. He is a physical defender and rebounder. Olson is headed to Grand Forks, he has committed to UND for football.
