Day 2 of the #PHMidwestGrindSession brought about some more new talent. I scouted the 17u group this weekend, so here are some 2023 Sunday afternoon standouts.

JP Sumo (2024) | 5’8 G | Servants Basketball 2023

Very intense and tireless defender. Absolutely worked on defense, pickup up full court whenever he was on the court. Very confident scorer who always wanted the basketball in his hands. Pretty tight handle and shifty ball handler.

Clayton Coke | 5’7 G | WKE 17u White

Coke has a lot of great aspects offensively in his game. Shot it particularly well from three, had some high level finishes to add to that, can knock down the midrange too. I liked his IQ as well, he knew when to pull up or attempt a floater when help side collapsed. Facilitated well for his squad, really liked how he utilized the pump fake in the paint to get bigs to jump.

[player_tooltip player_id="1214588" first="Mason" last="Gomez"] | 6’2 G | Kansas 94x50 Elite 2023

As I saw a little bit in the day before, Gomez can light it up from three. He hit some big times shots for his team against WKE. Knocked down the midrange a little bit more on Sunday, a few off balance, couple of fadeaways, real good looking shot from the left side. He was poised with the ball as harder closeouts came and did a great job of keeping that ball in the pocket in triple threat.

[player_tooltip player_id="1268830" first="Sage" last="Koelsch"] | 6’0 G | WKE 17u Blue

Koelsch ran so well in transition and got so many layups because of it. Had some great extra passes on the break as well if the gimme wasn’t there. Active hands defensively, got quite a few steals and go his hands on the basketball often in helpside.

[player_tooltip player_id="1146295" first="Hunter" last="Vaughn"] | 5’11 G | WKE 17u Blue

Another great guard prospect from a talented WKE squad. Polished point guard with a lot of intangibles. Tight handle, footwork, attacking closeouts, vision, jump shot, finishing, you name it Vaughn does it well. Had a real smooth right hand punch dribble to a stepback late in first half and knocked down the three. Lot of upside for this kid, he simply does a lot of things well.
