On Friday night, I was at Decatur Central High School checking out some of the top 15U teams and players in the event. Check out some of the top performers from those games below.
Josiah Calvin Josiah Calvin 5'10" | PG St. Viator | 2025 IL , St. Viator (IL) 2025
Calvin was the best guard I saw on Friday night, showing out for Greater Purpose in game one of the weekend. The first word that comes to mind with Calvin is crafty. The brother of former Saint Viator and current Wright State star Trey Calvin, Josiah is yet another creative guard in the family. Used a full array of moves, including a nasty crossover, to continuously get to the rack. There, he finished with both hands, acrobatically spinning, gliding, and jumping through the lane. Calvin is a master with the ball in his hands for his age, putting the correct spin on his lay-ups and calmly handling the rock out in transition. The lightning-quick guard was a bucket down the stretch!
Gus Donohue, Loyola (IL) 2025
Donohue shot the lights out for Greater Purpose, raining in threes from all over in a 12-point outing. The Loyola wing has good size on the outside at 6-foot-2, and rose up from 4+ feet beyond the arch for some deep buckets. A sniper who knows what his strengths are.
Joey Hernandez Joey Hernandez 5'9" | PG St. Viator | 2025 IL , St Viator (IL) 2025
Hernandez teamed up with Josiah Calvin Josiah Calvin 5'10" | PG St. Viator | 2025 IL to make up Greater Purpose’s back court, and the two will continue the family tradition in Saint Viator’s back court for the next few seasons. Hernandez has a strong lower body and used it to stick with his opposition all the way down the court on defense. On the offensive end, Hernandez proved he was confident when driving into the lane, whether he was driving and kicking or finishing strong at the rack. He and Calvin pair up perfectly.
Oneil Johnson, Champaign Centennial (IL) 2025
Johnson was another top shooter from Friday night’s action. Playing for Ft. Sooy No Limit, Johnson camped out around the outside and let his lead guards set him up. Found holes in the defense where he could catch and shoot, and also hit a couple of jumpers off the dribble. Right-handed jumper has tons of back-spin and splashed through the net all night.
Caden Piening – Anderson (OH) – 2025
Piening was the most dominant player of the night, owning the paint for Midwest Basketball Club. The D1 football recruit (offers from West Virginia, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, etc) is a stellar athlete who already stands at 6-foot-5 with natural strength. Everything about Piening on the basketball court was smooth. He was light on his feet with the ball in his hands and aggressive as ever when crashing the boards. Soft touch around the rim and is an excellent passer out of the post. Just an all-around stud who was the most efficient big I’ve seen at his age this year. Keep an eye on Piening on the All-tournament team if he keeps this production up the rest of the weekend!
Javaughn Robinson Javaughn Robinson 5'11" | PG Danville | 2025 State IL , Danville (IL) 2025
Robinson is a 6’0 guard who led the way for Ft. Sooy No Limit on both ends of the court. The two-sport stud plays defensive back and Quarterback on the football field, and showcased traits from both positions on the court. He intercepted countless passes at the top of the key, and from there, got out and ran. Calm transition leader and was unselfish on the break and in the half court. Real strong build for a young guard and has tremendous speed and change-of-pace.
Anthony Sowell, Lawrence Central (IN) 2025
Sowell was an electric ball-handler for INB Black on Friday night. The freshman used his quickness and low-to-the-ground dribble moves to find his way into the lane and set up his teammates with crisp passes on the outside and on the blocks. Sowell had a few nice finishes himself, including an acrobatic finish on a floater in the lane.
Caden Anderson, Marmion (IL) 2025
Anderson, a guard for M14, earned the respect of INB Black pretty quickly after hitting a few outside shots early. Whether he grabbed an offensive board on the baseline or set up for a three outside, Anderson was always ready to shoot. Patient passer in transition and protects the ball very well when he takes it himself.
Gideon Campbell, Northridge (IN) 2025
Campbell is a tough guard who used his body well in the paint. A reliable ball handler and a smooth shooter from outside, Campbell was one of the top scorers for Indiana Attack on the night. He moves without the ball well and hit a few mid-range pull-up jumpers.
Jayden Rodriguez, Evanston (IL) 2025
Rodriguez is a strong wing/forward who showed off a smooth, all-around skill set for a loaded Greater Purpose 15u squad. Has a variety of moves in the mid-range area, including a turnaround fadeaway jumper that he utilized multiple times. Rodriguez is a physical player who will be a dangerous prospect over the next few years up in Evanston.
Mason Bales Mason Bales 6'1" | SG Northridge | 2025 State IN , Northridge (IN) 2025
Bales is a 6-foot-1 off-ball guard who shined for Indiana Attack on Friday night. The vocal leader has an all-around skill set to go along with his competitiveness. He’s a lefty shooter and wasn’t afraid to pull up from three off the bounce or off the catch. Active without the ball and has great vision and passing ability in the lane. Bales was all over the place and had a great start to the weekend.
