The usual suspects like Britton Dutton Britton Dutton 6'0" | SG Argo Comm | 2023 State KS and Keller Hurla Keller Hurla 6'0" | CG St. Marys | 2023 State KS were on hand. But there were a lot of other guards worth noting.
Here are some Kansas guards who stood out in Lawrence (in alphabetical order):
Asa Barnes Asa Barnes 6'2" | SG Southeast | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2023, Southeast HS, Hunt United:
A lanky point guard who runs the show for Hunt United, Barnes is a sharp ball handler and distributor. He can create his shot off the bounce or on the stepback. Barnes is really athletic and quick up and down the floor.
Matthew Garber Matthew Garber 6'1" | CG Sabetha | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-1 guard, 2023, Sabetha HS, SSA Hoops Elite White (pictured):
Garber stood out as the primary point guard for the SSA White team that played up-tempo and unselfishly. Garber can find shooters and run the offense, but he’s also a deadeye shooter from deep who can create shots for himself. Garber is sneaky long and athletic.
Mason Gomez Mason Gomez 6'3" | SG Topeka | 2023 KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2023, Topeka HS, Kansas 94×50 Elite:
Gomez provided a lot of offense for the 94×50 team. The distance on his shot knows no limit. He gets his shot off quickly and doesn’t need much space. He’s a big, solid wing who handles the ball and can rebound.
Jake Mueller Jake Mueller 6'0" | SG Hayden | 2023 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2023, Hayden HS, SSA Hoops Elite White:
Mueller is a tireless team guy who makes a lot of plays all over the place. He’s the first one on the floor for a loose ball and shrugs off contact when taking the ball into the lane. Mueller is a tenacious defender too.
Jackson Noland, 6-foot-1 guard, 2023, Blue Valley Southeast HS, Drive-5 Select:
Noland really impressed in games on Sunday. He shot the lights out when he got hot. He handled the ball kept up the tempo, guiding Drive-5 to a lot of easy buckets in transition. Noland sees the floor and knows when to pull the trigger and when to distribute the ball.
Zach Sand, 6-foot-2 guard, 2023, Blue Valley North HS, Drive-5 Select:
The top-quality guards of Drive-5 just kept coming in waves. It’s hard to know which to focus on, but Sand definitely played well. He showed some creativity with the ball and played both roles in the give and go to perfection a couple of times. He moves the ball and made good entry passes to men in the lane, and also knocked down some threes.
