The Easter Classic in Fort Worth was an event that held true to that statement. There were a plethora of great guard performances during the three day event at the Game On Sportsplex. We will take a look at a ton of them here as the guards of 2023 put scouts and coaches on notice that they came to play.
De’Vion Lavergne De’Vion Lavergne 6'3" | CG North Central | 2023 State LA (6’3″ | Xtreme Hoops ’23 | Louisiana)
Lavergne may have been the best guard playing the entire weekend. He displayed a wide variety of ways to hurt teams during the Classic. He scored from all three levels and showed the ability to be a scorer and facilitator in transition. Lavergne also showed his hops catching alley-oops and finishing dunk putbacks. His ability to switch and defend multiple positions was on display as well. He definitely caught the eye of scouts and coaches in the building.
Donaven Davis Donaven Davis 6'1" | PG Wylie | 2023 State TX (6’1″ | Dallas Showtyme Black ’23 | Texas)
The lefty, Dallas Showtyme guard got a chance to show off his all-around guard skills during Saturday’s action at the Easter Classic. He displayed a nice dribble pull-up from the free throw line area. Davis also played the passing lanes and had several steals when teams tried to push the ball up the floor. He was a prime time performer during play during Day 2.
Dylan Hemphill (5’10″ | Mighty Kings 18U | Texas)
Hemphill played on an undermanned, Mighty Kings squad who lost to Xtreme Hoops. His team might not have won; however, he clearly showed what he could do on the floor. Hemphill is excellent with the ball in his hands and can get into the paint easily with the dribble. He is also a very gifted passer and fit several passes into tight spaces during the game. His team may not have one but his skill was on full display in Fort Worth.
Jayden Dugas Jayden Dugas 6'2" | CG Northside | 2023 State LA (6’1″ | Cenla Storm 17U | Louisiana)
This Cenla Storm guard displayed his gritty game on both ends of the floor during the course of his weekend in Texas. Dugas can get downhill quickly and took his fair share of punishment going to the rim. Several and-1 opportunities resulted. His defense was top tier as well as e stuck to offensive players on the perimeter and over screens like Velcro. Dugas was a two-way terror in Texas for the Easter Classic.
Jonathan Barron Jonathan Barron 5'11" | PG Northwood-Lena | 2023 State LA (5’11″ | Cenla Dynasty 17U | Louisiana)
Barron was one of the best point guards over the Easter weekend. He played as if he was in total control of the game at all times. His change of pace kept defenders off balance constantly. He was able to penetrate the paint and had some acrobatic finishes at the rim. Barron also showed he could space the floor and bury open jumpers. He has a very mature floor game as a point.
Brandon Hardison (5’10″ | Top Achievers Elite ’22 | Texas)
Hardison knows his way around the court. During the Easter Classic, he was very going at finishing at the rim with a serious of heady guard moves. Hardison was very adept at changing speeds to create contact and using the rim in an effort to complete his layups. His jumper was on automatic during a couple of games finding nothing but net. He is a high IQ guard who can get it done at multiple levels.
Isaiah Medrano (5’7″ | EP Matrix ’23 | Texas)
The tiny guard from El Paso has a big attitude and has some big game to go with it. In their win against Cenla Dynasty and the other games he played, Medrano was very hard to cover. He will release treys from anywhere on the floor. If he is making them, he will extend that range. Couple that with his ability to make opportunistic steals and Medrano is a guard who disrupts other teams constantly. His confidence is what I liked most and helped him play with swag throughout Easter weekend.
Zaydrien Sewell (6’2″ | Cenla Storm ’24 | Louisiana)
Sewell showed that he was the model “3 and D” guard during his weekend in Fort Worth. He came off the bench for the Cenla Storm and made an immediate impact when he touched the floor. He shot is well from three point range and was one of the catalyst in changing moment in two Storm victories. He is an up-and-coming guard who has a lot of potential as as shooter and stopper.
Other guards who had standout weekends:
Dylan Paddio (5’6″ | Xtreme Hoops ’24 | Louisiana)
Jeremiah Lewis Jeremiah Lewis 6'3" | SG Ponchatoula | 2024 State LA (6’1″ | HP Hoops | Louisiana)
Anthony Alvez Anthony Alvez 5'11" | SF Capital | 2022 NM (6’0″ | New Mexico D1-2 | New Mexico)
Look for these guards, and others, through the Prep Hoops Circuit travel season as they return to DFW and Houston next month.
