The updated 2023 class rankings in VA came out last week, and with that will come a lot of content in the next week or so!

Today, we take a look at part 1 of the guards rankings, ranking numbers 25-16.

Check out the full rankings here, and stay tuned for more content and class rankings updates!

25) [player_tooltip player_id="1241905" first="Corey" last="Caulker"] | 5’11” | Fairfax Christian (#89 Overall)

While Caulker sometimes gets overlooked with the amount of talent on this Fairfax Christian team that won the VISAA D3 state championship, there’s no doubt that he was a vital part to their success and took a lesser role to benefit his team. He’s a steady lead guard who plays with pace and makes others better, he’s an excellent shooter from deep and has a great middle game and he plays with savvy and makes plays on both ends of the floor.

24) [player_tooltip player_id="1403957" first="Lawrence" last="Cole"] | 6’1” | Northside (#85 Overall)

Cole had a breakout junior season after making a name for himself this summer, and he was a big reason that Northside was one possession away from making the state championship game. The 6’1” guard is a talented scorer that can put it on the deck and create space and make shots from multiple levels, he’s an athletic finisher and is smooth off the bounce and in transition and he can make plays for others and on the defensive end as well.

23) [player_tooltip player_id="1403956" first="Reuben" last="McEachern"] | 5’10” | Carmel School (#84 Overall)

McEachern is as tough as they come as he may not be the biggest guy on the court but he can do a lot of things to help his team whether it’s scoring the ball, making plays for others or defending. He’s a crafty guard who can change speeds and has a tight handle to create in one-on-one situations, he can knock down tough shots and get to the rim at will and he has good vision and delivers passes on the money as well.

22) [player_tooltip player_id="815592" first="Amari" last="Gray"] | 6’1” | Life Christian Academy (#80 Overall)

Gray has been a big part of the revitalization of the LCA program and he is one of the most productive guards in the RVA area in a number of different ways. He’s a strong combo who can put it on the deck and get downhill and finish, he can knock down shots from deep when he’s open and he’s an excellent rebounder for a guard who hits the glass on both ends.

21) [player_tooltip player_id="1107884" first="Stylz" last="Gardner"] | 5’11” | Peninsula Catholic (#73 Overall)

Gardner had another great year for PC who was one of the top teams in the 757, and he broke the 1,000 point mark and showed he’s one of the top scorers in the area. He’s a crafty combo that can create space off the bounce or can work off the ball to get open and knock down shots, he is a crafty finisher in the midrange and at the rim and he’s the type of player who can get hot and fill it up in bunches.

20) [player_tooltip player_id="999631" first="Aiden" last="Filipiano"] | 6’4” | Catholic (#71 Overall)

Filipiano is a big guard who can do a little bit of everything to help his team win, as he plays the game the right way and helped lead Catholic to the TCIS championship this year. He’s the type of player who will take on many roles as he can guard multiple positions and makes plays on the defensive end, he has good vision and can deliver a number of different passes to cutters and shooters and he can score it efficiently from different spots on the floor.

19) [player_tooltip player_id="1403925" first="Jaedon" last="Harris"] | 5’11” | John Paul the Great (#69 Overall)

Harris is the definition of a floor general and despite not being the biggest or most athletic player he can impact the game in winning ways and lead a team as both a playmaker and a scorer. He’s a tough nosed guard who is crafty off the bounce and changes speeds and directions well, he can knock down shots from deep and is a good finisher of the bounce in the midrange and at the rim over bigger defenders and he makes the right play and sees the floor and delivers passes on the money.

18) [player_tooltip player_id="999633" first="Ryan" last="Hite"] | 6’3” | King’s Fork (#67 Overall)

While Hite isn’t the top scorer on his group, he’s the type of player that is easy to like as he’s the tough guy on his team and brings the dog out of everyone else with the way he plays. He’s a strong and athletic guard who finishes at and above the rim, he can guard the other team’s best player and brings physicality and he rebounds well and can knock down shots from deep on kick outs.

17) [player_tooltip player_id="999652" first="Troy" last="Giles"] | 6’1” | Smithfield (#58 Overall)

A first team All State selection as a junior, Giles is a versatile guard who is explosive and skilled and plays at his own pace when he’s on the ball. He’s able to get to spots off the bounce using screens or in isolation situations and he can make tough midrange shots, he can spot up and knock down the three ball when he’s off the ball, he’s a good playmaker with good vision and he’s a good defender both on the ball and in help side.

16) [player_tooltip player_id="1403923" first="Dj" last="Holloway"] | 6’0” | Hayfield (#52 Overall)

Holloway was part of a Hayfield team that many could argue was the best public school in the state, as they ran the table to a Class 6 state championship and he was named to the All State team. At 6’0” the combo guard makes up for his size with his explosive leaping ability and finishing ability at the rim, he’s a lock down defender who can use his strength and athleticism to stay in front of ball handlers, he’s a good rebounder and he’s very explosive in transition and when he gets downhill and in the paint.
