We have finally updated our class of 2023 rankings, and with the season coming to an end in VA it comes at the perfect time! We have ranked 120 players in the class, something that’s very tough to limit with all of the talented and college worthy players in the state of VA. Enjoy the rankings and stay tuned for upcoming content this week including new faces, biggest stock risers, positional rankings and committed players in the class!
As always, we apologize if we have overlooked a few kids, but it’s a very difficult job to do!
Class Starting to Shape Up
The jump players take during the junior season is usually the biggest in their development, and with that we are starting to see the class shape up. Typically, when ranking younger than a junior class there’s still so much in the air about whether a kid will develop or grow, and a lot of it is based on potential. By their junior year, it’s usually much more clear as they will get more playing time, have gone through growth spurts and developed their game as they’ve grown into their bodies. Because of that, you will see in these rankings there were quite a few players who jumped a lot in the rankings, as we’re starting to get a clear picture of their level as a prospect.

The Summer the Recruiting Picks Up
While some top players will see a handful of offers through their first few years of high school basketball, the summer between their junior and senior season while playing 17U is usually when the recruitment picks back up. The NCAA will go back to the normal recruiting calendar with two AAU live periods in April, two high school live periods in June and three AAU live periods in July. It will be interesting to see who catches the eyes of college coaches, with a lot of players in VA having developed over the past year or so and now is the time for them to play their best basketball. There could be even more major changes after the summer in the rankings depending on who shows out.
Hardest Class I’ve Had to Do?
While all rankings are difficult as you don’t want to forget kids and it is just an opinionated take by a few scouts, this 2023 class has been one of the most difficult to do every since I did my first rankings a few years ago. There has been constant fluctuation with who is in the class and who is in the state, players have improved immensely in this class and part of that likely has to do with the Covid year where they just worked on their game and developed, but that Covid year also stunted my ability to get out and see many of them play. Needless to say, it has been very difficult and I know it won’t get any easier!
