The regional finals held at the Convocation center featured two intense battles. In the first game of the afternoon, Africentric took down Garaway in a contest that was only a one-point game at halftime. In the second game of the day, Waverly took down Heath in overtime after battling with the Bulldogs in overtime last season. In this article I’ll be breaking down the top performers from these two games.

[player_tooltip player_id="922605" first="Dailyn" last="Swain"], 6’7 SF Africentric 2023: Swain is in my opinion the top prospect in 2023 with many other close challengers right behind him. Swain once again proved it on the big stage with 30 points on some leak out dunks, some isolation pull-ups and some acrobatic layup finishes. It was a complete effort against a team that didn’t have the size or athleticism to match-up with him anywhere on the court. This leads Africentric into a battle with Ottawa Glandorf in a Division III state tournament that’s ANYONE’S to win.

Alexander Rodin, 6’2 SF Garaway 2023: Garaway doesn’t start a single senior and this squad should be a favorite to return to the Convo next season and Rodin and his twin brother Brady are key reasons why the Pirates were so successful this season. Rodin was the best athlete that Garaway had on the court and the lefty found some success driving to the basket and with a few nice dump off passes as well. You could see why Garaway was successful as they were patient to get good looks at the basket and believed they could pull off the upset.

[player_tooltip player_id="967167" first="Trey" last="Robertson"], 5’10 PG Waverly 2022: Robertson carried his team to the final four with 22 points and some crucial assists as Waverly and Heath played an overtime battle for the second straight season. Robertson has a majority of the offense run through him, but still does a great job keeping his teammates involved and getting them good looks. I was impressed with Robertson’s composure after struggling from the outside to start the game. Then in overtime, after Robertson was scoring the ball well in the second half, he made some great passes for scores to seal the win. Robertson is one of the better available point guards left in the 2022 class and is certainly worthy of scholarship looks from programs.

[player_tooltip player_id="1138763" first="Reece" last="Huber"], 6’3 SF Heath 2022: Heath got solid production from a variety of players in their senior laden core, but I choose Huber as a top performer because of his ball-handling creation that got other teammates involved throughout the game. Huber also led the Bulldogs in scoring with 13 points on some slashes to the basket and 3-pointers. Despite eventually falling short of the state tournament, this Heath program reached new heights thanks to the senior class of Huber, [player_tooltip player_id="967170" first="Keylan" last="Williams"], [player_tooltip player_id="921747" first="Brandon" last="McLaughlin"], [player_tooltip player_id="1285275" first="Joshua" last="Guy"] and others.
