The high school basketball regular season is over and AAU season is just about ready to tip off. This past weekend, McBride High School played host to Pangos Best of the West Shootout. I was able to attend the event on the second day, Sunday, March 27 and here’s a quick look at some of the top standouts I saw.

1. [player_tooltip player_id="1409409" first="Isaiah" last="Lewis"] - Taft 2022

Lewis is another top unsigned senior. He’s more of a scoring guard who has some playmaking ability. He handles the ball well in transition; he pushes the pace and is a good finisher on the break. He can get all the way to the rim or he uses jump stops to get the defense in the air and get a better look at the rim. He’s a good catch and shoot player from three. Squares up well and he’s really worked on that three-point shot to become near automatic when left open.

2. Colin Huang - Portola 2023

Huang is a player I’ve seen before and he’s a pretty solid point guard. He keeps his head up on the break and is a solid passer in transition. Keeps the ball moving and looks to pass first. He can attack off the dribble in the halfcourt and he draws fouls and gets himself to the free throw line. Consistent shooter from three-point range.

3. Reid Celestin - Brewster Academy 2023

Celestin is in the mold of a big point guard. He can playmake and get past his defender without a screen but what really stood out to me was his defensive ability. He has good length that he uses to contest jumpers well as well as tie up the ball handler and force them to pick up their dribble. He stays low, keeps his arms out and keeps the ball handler in front of him. Communicates well defensively too.

4. Will Brenner - Bishop Montgomery 2023

Brenner is a big man with some solid upside. He’s a strong rebounder in traffic; gets good position and is able to grab offensive rebounds and get put backs in the paint. He uses his size and strength to draw fouls and get the free throw line where he shoots it at a decent clip. He has a soft touch inside. Able to catch the ball in the high post and make a strong move to the rim. Uses jump stops in the paint.
