Continue ReadingThe NIAA boys state tournament ran from Thurs February 24th through Saturday, February 26th. This year the tournament is split between two sites. Reno will host 5A and 2A while Las Vegas will host 4A, 3A and 1A from the Cox Pavillion. I got a chance to check out the 3A Semifinals, and Championship game, providing me with a look at some prospects that I seldom get a chance to see. The Title game was between Boulder City and Elko who was making their third straight appearance. Behind a raucous crowd, the Indians took home the crown. Here’s a look at our All-Tournament Team.
MVP: Isaiah Dahl Isaiah Dahl 6'4" | SG Elko | 2022 State NV 6’4 SG Elko 2022 (#28PHN 2022) – Dahl was brilliant this weekend. I thought his ability to defend and shoot the basketball bordered on elite. Dahl showed that he is much more than a catch-and-shoot specialist, knocking down shots both off the bounce and while coming off screens. His defense also stood out as he used his length and agility to stay in front of the most dangerous ballhandlers for the opposition. After watching him play this weekend, I’ve moved him into a solid D2 prospect category. Was fortunate to catch up with him after the Championship game.
1st Team:
Michael Klekas Michael Klekas 6'3" | SF Elko | 2022 State NV 6’3 SF Elko 2022 (#11PHN 2022) – I gained a new found respect for Klekas this week. A lot of times a guy who is a big time scorer would have a tendency to hunt shots when he’s not scoring a bunch. Instead, Klekas allowed Dahl to keep flowing. The senior forward instead concentrated on doing all the little things to help his team win, including rebounding and defending. The title was the perfect way for him to cap his storied career.
Dawson Dumas Dawson Dumas 6'1" | PG Elko | 2022 State NV 6’1 SG Elko 2022 (#57PHN 2022) – It felt like whenever Dahl wasn’t making a shot Dumas was. The senior guard served as yet another weapon for a loaded Elko squad. Dumas handled a lot of the ballhandling duties for the club in the backcourt, allowing their offensive attack to flow into the frontcourt. Dumas averaged in double figures at 10ppg throughout the Championship run.
Gavin Douglas Gavin Douglas 6'7" | SF Boulder City | 2022 State NV 6’7 SF Boulder City 2022 (#37PHN 2022) – Douglas would be the first person to tell you that there are no excuses, but he competed on a hobbled ankle for most of the Semis and Finals. His toughness was only one of his qualities on display this week. The senior forward rebounded defended and showed the ability to get to the cup, helping BC reach the Championship game.
Jett Caudle Jett Caudle 5'9" | PG Fernley | 2023 State NV 5’9 PG Fernley 2023 – If ever a player was appropriately named it’s Caudle. He played like a jett, getting into the lane at will. Caudle showed a good handle and played with a nice pace, keeping defenders off balance. Once he touched the paint, he showed off a variety of around-the-basket finishes, including floaters and same hand, same leg finishes. Despite the loss, he finished with 22 in the Semifinal game against Boulder City.
Roman Rose Roman Rose 6'2" | SG Boulder City | 2024 State NV 5’10 SG Boulder City 2024 – Have to give some love to Rose. The sophomore threw his name into the ring as one of the top Snipers in the state. Rose showed a remarkably quick release spraying threes from all over the court in the Semifinal game against Fernley. He finished that game with 5 and had seven total made threes for the week.
2nd Team:
Martin Thompson Martin Thompson 5'11" | PG Boulder CIty | 2022 State NV 5’11 SG Boulder City 2022
Joshua Cartagena 5’10 CG Fernley 2022
Roderick Johnson Roderick Johnson 5'10" | PG Somerset Losee | 2025 State NV 5’6 PG Somerset Losee 2025
Andoni Fesenmaier Andoni Fesenmaier 6'4" | PF Elko | 2022 State NV 6’5 C Elko 2022
Trae Still 6’3 SG Elko 2022
