Nobody in Florida High school basketball was better at dishing the rock than the guys listed below in the “Elite 8” of passing.
First – Tariq Shakir, 5’9″, So. | Coming in at number one in the state is the sophomore guard from Matanzas High School. Tariq averaged a ridiculous 8 assists per game. He also had an AST/TO (assist to turnover ratio) of 2.1. For reference, anything over 1 is good. Definitely look out for Tariq Shakir next season.
Second – Damon Leigh, 6’3″, Sr. | Leigh posted absurd numbers all year long. His game high 14 assists came against Pine High School. Damon averaged 7.6 assists per game this year, while also scoring 24 points per game. He is a do-it-all type of player.
Third – Carter Hodge, 5’10″, Jr. | Hodge was very close to averaging a triple double this year, which shows how effective he is on the court. His 7.5 assists per game were enough to land him in the top 3 in the state. Hodge is poised to have a monster senior year.
Fourth – Andrew Johnson, 5’10″, Jr. | Andrew narrowly missed the third spot, dishing 7.4 assists per game. The junior from Pensacola had 2 games with 14 assists and one with 15. Expect to see him back at the top of the list after next season.
Fifth – Caleb Williams Caleb Williams 6'5" | PG Sumner | 2025 #191 Nation KS , 5’10″, So. | Williams had a very solid sophomore season, averaging 7 assists per game and a jaw dropping 2.98 AST/TO. This would rank him in the top 30 of NBA players for the same stat. Williams should only go up from year, and I am expecting a breakout 2022-23 season for the young guard.
Sixth – Samuel Santiago, 6’4″, Sr. | Samuel averaged 7 assists per game this year, which technically ties him for fifth place in the state. The 6’4″ senior is extremely talented in every facet of the game. He also averaged a double-double with 19ppg and 11rpg.
Seventh – Jay White Jay White 6'1" | PG Southwest Florida Christian | 2022 State FL , 6’1″, Sr. | White was phenomenal at finding the open guy this year, leading to 6.7 assists per game. He is what you want in a point guard. White can score the ball efficiently while also getting his teammates involved.
Eighth – Jalen Reece Jalen Reece 5'11" | PG Oak Ridge | 2025 State #92 Nation FL , 5’10″, Fr. | Probably the most talented freshman in Central Florida, Reece averaged 6.7 assists per game for Oak Ridge as a freshman. Jalen had a crazy impressive 6.96 AST/TO ratio, which would put him at number 2 in the NBA, right on the heels of the league leading 7.1. Reece has already earned an offer from SMU, and will 100% get many more over the next couple years. Watch for him to be ranked very highly in our 2025 rankings.
