Continue ReadingThe Louisiana Sportswriters Association (LSWA) released the all-state selections for Class C at the stroke of midnight on March 29th. North Louisiana took home the Most Outstanding Player award last season when Ebarb’s Zach Parrie won the award. This year, John-Paul Ricks John-Paul Ricks 6'0" | PG Jehovah-Jireh | 2022 State #206 Nation LA won the award making him a two-time winner (he was MOP after his sophomore season). There are some players that I automatically figured would make the first and second team and a couple of surprises as well. In this Prep Hoops exclusive, I will take a look at members of the Class C All-state team.
1st Team
*Joseph Adams (Calvin)
In his junior year, the 6’ guard from Calvin averaged 30.5 points and was named second team all-state. What did he do for an encore? Adams averaged 28.5 and helped his team to a Class C state runner-up finish. Adams is good at getting to the rim and he absorbs contact better than a lot of guards in higher classifications. I figured he was a first team lock and he was just that.
Derwin Ancar Derwin Ancar 6'2" | SG Phoenix | 2023 State LA (Phoenix)
Ancar is probably one of the most athletic guards in the junior class and he knows how to get buckets. He helped Phoenix get to Lake Charles last season and was not named to the all-state team as an honorable mention. His 20 ppg gave him first team recognition this year. He has the talent to be a breakout junior this summer and is definitely a junior to watch.
Terrance James Terrance James 6'4" | SF Gibsland-Coleman | 2023 State LA (Gibsland-Coleman)
The newly crowned state champion has the talent to be a top ten player by the time his high school career ends. James has small guard ability in his athletic 6’4 frame. He has the ability to guard all positions on the floor in this class and his defense was excellent during the Bulldogs playoff run. He is another junior who should have a big grassroots season this summer.
Bryson Martin (Family Christian)
As a junior, Martin was part of a Family Christian team that almost defeated Jehovah-Jireh for the Division V title. This year, his 18 ppg helped Family Christian seal the deal. Martin is very hard to keep out of the paint. His paint pull-up jumper is automatic and his driving ability draw and kick is high level. His ability to make those plays is why he was a first team selection.
* John-Paul Ricks John-Paul Ricks 6'0" | PG Jehovah-Jireh | 2022 State #206 Nation LA (Jehovah-Jireh)
Ricks is the best guard in Class C and the best point guard in the 2022 graduating class. His 3600 points and four state titles will list him as one of the most prolific players in Louisiana high school hoops history. While his next steps will take him to Tallahassee CC, JP Ricks will be a hard player to forget. He was definitely deserving of the MOP this season.
2nd Team
Brady Alexander Brady Alexander 6'0" | CG Hornbeck | 2023 State LA (Hornbeck)
Alexander is one of the more versatile players in Class C. He can be your post scorer on one possession can then spot up and drain a three on the next. He is a smart basketball player who can shoot and rebound. Scoring 18 ppg as a junior for a perennial Class C power is no small task. For that very reason, his second team nod is very much warranted.
Braxton Basco (Simpson)
I think this is the first I do not remember Simpson playing for a Class C title. It was not because of the play of Braxton Basco. His 16 points per game was part of his steady accent to becoming one of Simpson’s go-to players. He can shoot it from three with winning the LHSCA 3 point shootout did attest to. Basco is a winner and a fierce competitor. Definitely all-state material.
Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland-Coleman)
Coleman probably has some of the best defensive timing on the Class C level. His ability to block shots is one of the reasons Gibsland-Coleman was able to turnback late possessions by Calvin and win a state title. Coleman can also run the floor and can score in the paint with both hands. He was a defensive and offensive stalwart all season for the Bulldogs earning his all-state nod.
Wayne Huckaby Wayne Huckaby 6'0" | PG Calvin | 2022 State LA (Calvin)
Huckaby is as solid as they come at the point guard position. He reads situations well in the half court and is not afraid to take advantage of fast break opportunities. He was really good with Calvin in their title run and showed he can handle his own with others at the All-star game. I would not be surprised if I see him on someone’s college basketball roster next year. He can play.
Chance Martin (Family Christian)
Chance has a game that is very similar to Bryson’s. He is very quick in the open floor and is hard to stay in front of when he is attacking the painted area. The Family Christian junior has one more year and will probably be on the short list for Most Outstanding Player for next season. If he picks up his scoring, he will definitely be on that list. Solid second team selection.
Honorable mention:
* Jaren Mitcham Jaren Mitcham 6'0" | CG Hornbeck | 2022 State LA (Hornbeck), A.J. Allen (Claiborne Christian), Brayden Cutts (Simpson), *Quay Seaberry (St. Joseph-Plaucheville), Jaggar Thibodeaux (Northside Christian); *Tyren Johnson (Plainview); C.J. Scott (Pleasant Hill), Rondell Battle (Phoenix)
* Players with asterisks are returning Class C all-state members.
Look for the Class B list to come out soon.
