Continue ReadingThere’s a nice mix of elite teams and a sense of parody among those at the top this season. I’m going to give you my top 2 from Division 1 and Division 2. This isn’t a prediction as far as a state finals pairing or a 1-3 ranking, just the 3 teams that I think sit at the top right now.
DIVISION 3
FLINT BEECHER
Beecher once again as a shot at bringing home a state title. They are athletic, tough, and experienced.
Carmelo Harris Carmelo Harris 6'0" | CG Flint Beecher | 2022 State MI (2022, PG)
Harris has very successfully taken the reigns as the primary ball handler for Beecher. He has been hitting cutters with zip and accuracy this season. Harris moves well without the ball and can punish a team that loses him on the perimeter.
Robert Lee Robert Lee 6'2" | SG Flint Beecher | 2023 State MI (2022, SG)
Lee is one of those fruit fly type players. He always seems to be around the ball and always seems to be making a play of some kind. Lee is a solid finisher at the rim and a much improved passer.
ECORSE
Ecorse has star power and a vastly improved cast around him. If they peak at the right time, they can bring home a championship.
Kenneth Morrast (2023, G)
Morrast is a very underrated player that can create off the dribble as well as get hot with his jumper. He’s done a nice job taking over as a dependable scorer this season. On a young team, Morrast is a sign that the best is still ahead for this Ecorse squad.
Malik Olafioye Malik Olafioye 6'2" | PG Ecorse | 2023 MI (2023, PG)
Olafioye has the ability to carry his squad to a state title. He’s currently ranked #40 nationally by Prep Hoops. He’s a bona fide playmaker with the ball and can absolutely take over a game offensively.
RIVERVIEW GABRIEL RICHARD
The Pioneers have all the pieces of the puzzle with a seasoned and efficient floor general, a young elite athlete, and a powerful post player.
Michael Calhoun Michael Calhoun 6'7" | PF Riverview Gabriel Richard | 2022 State MI (2022, PF)
Calhoun provides his team with a nasty post presence. He’s a physical and tough player that will fight for position in the paint. Calhoun will earn extra possessions and limit possessions for opponents with his work on the glass.
Luke Westerdale Luke Westerdale 6'1" | SG Gabriel Richard | 2025 State MI (2025, CG)
Westerdale is an elite freshman that is more than ready for the big stage. He can shoot off the dribble with 3 point range and has a nice little righty scoop finish. Westerdale is a gifted 2 way player that eyes the ball, and when it’s put in front of him, knocks it away for a steal.
