Sioux Falls, SD - The #1 Rough Riders took care of business tonight in a cross-town rivalry and moved to 17-0 on the year. With the loss tonight, Washington is now 9-7 on the season. It was a packed house tonight at Roosevelt and a fun atmosphere. Washington won the 1st quarter and held the vaunted Riders offense to 8 first-quarter points. The Warrior zone defense slowed down RHS early on, however it would not last. [player_tooltip player_id="1265960" first="Angok" last="Akot"] started for the first time this season for Washington and he had an impact on the game, however, it was not enough to make a difference on the final score. After the first quarter, the Riders flexed their muscles and dominated. They outscored the Warriors 19-6 in the 3rd quarter. Halfway through the 4th quarter, both teams had their subs in the game. It was an overall dominant and well-balanced game for the Riders. They scored 66 points and only had one player score in double figures. This win gives RHS 28 straight wins if you include the end of last season. It is fair to say that the Riders are on a roll! It was a nice way to celebrate senior night for the Rough Riders. Do not count out Washington, they have all the pieces to get things put back together and to be a State Tournament team. Good luck to Washington and Roosevelt with the remainder of the season!

SCORES

1Q - W 13 R 8

2Q - W 19 R 26

3Q - W 25 R 45

4Q FINAL - W 40 R 66

Impressive Warriors

[player_tooltip player_id="812201" first="Mikele" last="Kambalo"] (2022) |5-9 PG|

He did not score many points because the Riders did a great job defensively on him. It was still easy to see that Kambalo is a stud athlete. His handles are awesome and his quickness is great. In the first half, Mikele made about 4 moves on the Rider D, finally slipped by the defender, and stuck in a tough 8-foot floater with a soft touch. Kambalo possesses an ankle-breaking crossover. He created multiple TO's with his quick hands and anticipation. Mikele and the Warriors will bounce back and be ready to make a postseason run.

[player_tooltip player_id="968154" first="Joe" last="Uttecht"] (2022) |6-1 SG|

He stuck out tonight with hustle and heady plays. Uttecht was also impressive in the first half when he was attacking off the bounce. Joe is a smart and clever player. He makes the correct pass and he gets his hands on the basketball in a sneaky fashion. I liked when he swiped the ball from a Rider when he was coming down with a rebound. Joe got the ball and was fouled on a quick shot. He also showed nice hustle when grabbing rebounds. Uttecht was aggressive off the bounce early and he put pressure on the Rider defense. I like the looks of his downhill game. Joe had a great attack, split two defenders, and he finished it with a difficult scoop shot. I loved when Joe drove through the lane and found a spotting up Akot in the corner for a triple.

[player_tooltip player_id="1265960" first="Angok" last="Akot"] (2022) |6-8 F|

8 points in the game. He missed a bunch of games earlier in the season with a knee injury. Akot has played in a couple of games before tonight, but this was his first time starting this season. Akot went through a bit of foul trouble in this one but he still made some splashy plays. In the zone defense, Angok tipped passes for TO’s. He also fought for rebounds and skied for boards above the Rider would-be rebounders. In the first half, Akot had a marvelous drive from the left-wing across the lane. He showed some shake when getting by the defender and Akot finished it with a finger-roll after he took a bump from the D. Angok is so long and athletic! On the other end, Akot had a great block that he swatted off the backboard. I was impressed with his hustle when attempting to save a ball from going out of bounds. After the save, he drilled a 3-ball on the other end. Angok showed off his athleticism with a nice 2-handed dunk that he made look easy. Keep your eyes on this senior, he is only going to get better as the season progresses.

[player_tooltip player_id="1172904" first="Zharic" last="Sheppard"] (2023) |6-6 F|

The lanky lefty finished with 9 points and three 3-pointers. Sheppard looked good spacing the floor and knocking down the deep ball in rhythm. Zharic also made a great team play by taking a charge.

Mandalla Mohamed (2023) |6-2 G/F|

He was a nice spark off the bench in the first half for the Warriors. Mohamed drilled a 3-ball in the first quarter to help WHS take the lead. In the first, the Warriors created a TO and Mandalla quickly scored on the other end with a transition basket. I liked the way he fought for rebounds and tipped the ball to teammates if he could not grab it. Mohamed also looked good attacking and getting to the line in the first half.

Impressive Rough Riders

[player_tooltip player_id="1388119" first="Micah" last="Johnson"] (2022) |5-11 G|

13 points. I was very impressed with his game tonight. Johnson is a DUDE. He was a lock-down defender tonight on the Washington star guard. On offense, Micah never forced and he was always in control. He showed a great high-arcing shot over a 6'8 defender from WHS. Johnson showed excellent hustle with a blocked shot in transition that saved a bucket for the Riders. His athleticism and hang time were impressive when finishing at the rim. Micah is electric in transition. I loved his effort with an O-board putback. Johnson has a smooth pull-up jumper and an overall deadly game. This kid is a baller!

[player_tooltip player_id="812190" first="Vance" last="Borchers"] (2022) |6-3 G/F|

I had heard he was athletic and Vance showed it tonight. He had the best dunk of the game with an impressive 2-handed WHAM in transition. On defense, Vance had a nice blocked shot. He also went coast-to-coast with a speedy take and was fouled. He is an athletic player that goes hard all the time. Vance looked great with a baseline drive and dish to McMillan for an easy basket. He proved that he can shoot it with a made 3-ball. Borchers also looked good rebounding the ball tonight.

[player_tooltip player_id="968178" first="Gabe" last="Kranzler"] (2022) |5-10 G|

I liked the way he put zip on his passes. Kranzler showed that he can shoot it with a made 3-ball in the first quarter. Later in the game, Gabe hit a tough shot in the middle of the lane against the trees from Washington. I liked how hard Kranzler pushes the ball in transition. He is a top-notch role player for the Rough Riders.

[player_tooltip player_id="968150" first="Marcus" last="Phillips"] (2022) |6-6 F|

9 points tonight. To start the game, Phillips attacked the basket and was fouled, which sent him to the FT-line. He showed a sweet floater from 7-feet vs. the Washington zone. Marcus hit another tough shot in the heart of the Warrior zone. I like the way he used his body to protect the basketball. Much like the other Rider players, Phillips is an unselfish player. On defense, Phillips did a nice job on Akot. Marcus boarded up and showed that he is a top talent in SD. He is a special athlete and basketball player.

Sam McMillan (2022) |6-2 F|

He is a solid role player that does not do too much and Sam takes what the defense gives him. McMillan scored with a point-blank layup off a Borchers dime. Sam also scored with a very difficult scoop/hook shot with a defender in his face.

[player_tooltip player_id="968168" first="Thoralingo" last="Gilo"] (2022) |6-1 G|

He is a very nice player off the bench for the Riders. Gilo is an exemplary athlete that can make plays. Thoralingo hit a smooth 3-point shot and he had an impressive acrobatic finish at the basket.

[player_tooltip player_id="1273981" first="Hayden" last="Brown"] (2022) |6-1 G|

He is a 3-point sniper and a zone buster! Hayden drilled multiple catch-n-shoot 3-pointers tonight. Brown's shooting form looks perfect and he has a quick trigger. Hayden also looked good when scoring in transition. I like the way Hayden moves without the ball and how he spots up for nice looks.

[player_tooltip player_id="968215" first="Justin" last="Shaw"] (2022) |6-4 F|

He is a strong and powerful player off the bench for the Riders. Shaw had an impressive post-up AND1 finish. He followed it by cashing in the FT for an old-fashioned 3-point play. Justin looked like a bully on the block.
