Prep Hoops was in Stockton California Saturday February 5, to see players in the 209 area part of NorCal. There were six games played with quality players in all games here’s a run down of players who played well but came up short in the win column.

Kamel Johnson 6’1 2024 G of Cornerstone Christian

Johnson is a long wiry athletic player at 6’1, who’s got good speed and movement with or without the ball. He’s a lefty that had good drives to the basket. He didn’t score a lot in this game, but he has good ball handling skills, and the athleticism to continue to grow his game. He’s got the foot speed, and length to be a good defender.

[player_tooltip player_id="1380891" first="Josh" last="Chavez"] 6’5 2023 SF of Stagg.

Chavez is a big body player who can be hard to guard in the post area. He’s the teams leading scorer and rebounder. He works well at the high post with good passing, and a hard drive to the rim. He can hit the short jumper from the free throw area and along the baseline. 21pts

Cameron Hayes 5’9 2023 PG, SG of Lathrop

Hayes is one of those shifty guards who can use his dribble to break down defenders, and get them off balance to create space so he can either shoot his 3-point shot or get in close for the elbow jumpers, and floaters. He had four 3’s in the game to lead his team in scoring. 22pts.

[player_tooltip player_id="1380902" first="Varick" last="Lewis"] 6’3 2023 SG of Monterey Trail.

Lewis has a good looking jump shot, with plenty of rise to it. He can knock it down with some consistency behind the 3 point line. He uses that extra dribble to get extra lift to get the maximum rise out his jumper. He had four 3’s in the first half. Lewis is fine tuning other parts of his game. He had good drives to the basket. He took a charge, handled well in transition looking to pass up, and at 6’3 he’s getting a good number of rebounds. 19pts.

Mario Williams 6’3 2024 SG of Venture Academy.

A long slender prospect who is still growing, and developing his skill set as a player. Williams is aggressive looking to put up his jump shot from 3, or the mid-range. He spots up well in the corners, he looks for his shot coming off screen, and in transition. He has a good upside, he’ll get stronger and improve in other areas. He dropped four 3’s, 18pts.

[player_tooltip player_id="947816" first="Miles" last="Byrd"] 6’7 2022 PG of Lincoln, Stockton.

Bird has size, length, and a good set of skills, with plenty of room to grow his game at the next level. The San Diego State commit standing 6’7 can handle, and pass like a guard. He can knock down his 3-point shot at a good rate. He’ll defend on the perimeter, take up the passing lane space. He’ll get his fair share of rebounds. 15pts
