The Prep Hoops 2023 NorCal Rankings are out. Here’s our continued list of newcomers. We have expanded our list from 89 to 148 prospects in this 2023 class. There’s been plenty of movements up and down. Prep Hoops makes every effort to see and evaluate prospects in the Northern California Region.

[player_tooltip player_id="1266053" first="Mekhi" last="Thomas"] 6’4 G/W of Dublin

Thomas a long high flying athlete excels when he can get into the open court, and transition. He’s good at knifing his way to the rim for finishes. The lefty has a good first step on the attack. He can help on the boards, rebound and push. He has good length and foot speed to defend multiple positions and on the perimeter. He’s on the Wright Watch List.

[player_tooltip player_id="1380866" first="Money" last="Williams"] 6’3 SG, of Oakland

Williams a 6’3 SG has been operating under the radar until a few weeks ago when we had the opportunity to see him play. He’s versatile guard who can score in many ways, a season high 33pts, defend multiple positions, and rebound. He’s the leading scorer for Oakland High 20pts, 5.7rebs. He has good awareness, good hands, and brings that toughness you want to see in players. He's on Wright’s Watch List.

[player_tooltip player_id="1380771" first="Kellen" last="Torrey"] 5’10 PG of California

Torrey is a fast guard with good handles, he can play fast or slow with a good change of direction. He shows patience up top to be a quality facilitator in the half court. He sees the court well and passes up in transition. He’ll challenge bigs in the paint. He can hit the 3ptr when left alone. He’s an alert defender with good hands.

[player_tooltip player_id="1380760" first="Isaiah" last="Chandavong"] 6’4 G/W of Inderkum.

A solid contributor on a team that went 26-2, 12-0. His contributions to the team don’t always show up in the stat box. He’s a good all around player, who has good foot speed and length to defend guards and forwards. He’ll fill the lanes in transition, and finish at the rim, and he’ll make the extra pass, get his hands on loose balls. He can handle and pass.

[player_tooltip player_id="1380872" first="Julian" last="Costa"] 6’1 SG of Liberty.

Costa is a quality guard who can hit the 3pt shot off the dribble and on the catch and shoot. He scores on transition layups with an occasional 3. He has quality handles and can be a facilitator at times. He’s a calm player that doesn’t get to caught up in the excitement when the games on the line.

[player_tooltip player_id="1381183" first="Clay" last="Naffziger"] 6’2 Sg of Campolindo

Naffziger is a quality 3pt shooter on the top team in NorCal Campolindo 27-1, 12-0. He understands his role this season and plays it well. He’s a good passer and ball mover, a slasher and a cutter. He runs the court, find his spots and looks to shoot the 3’s whenever the opportunity arises, from the corners, wings on the catch or in transition. He plays good team defense, usually in good help position.

[player_tooltip player_id="1380890" first="Miles" last="Lawrence"] 6’4 G/F of Liberty.

Lawrence has some talent we’re yet to see. He’s a good all around player with improving basketball skills. He was a key contributor on a team that went 19-5 overall. He can score inside using hops and strength. He has the 3 range to hit shots on the perimeter, and the handles to get into the paint. He’ll pass, defend, run the court, and rebound at a good rate. He’s on the Wright’s Watch List.

[player_tooltip player_id="1380765" first="Owen" last="Ubaldo"] 6’3 G, of Jesuit.

Ubaldo is a wiry thin prospect, who plays best in a wide open set and in space. He’s good in transition, using good movement and handles to get himself into the paint for jumpers and floaters. He can spot up for 3’s too. He has long arms, with decent foot speed to stay in front of defenders.

[player_tooltip player_id="1380766" first="Sterling" last="McClanahan"] 6’3 SG of Vanden

He has good size, and strength for the guard position. He handles well enough to get into the paint for strong finishes and paint jumpers. He goes hard in transition finishing in multiple ways including above the rim. He has the strength and footspeed to be a quality defender. He has some scoring abilities. We need to see more of him.

[player_tooltip player_id="1380768" first="Isaiah" last="Chala"] 6’4 F of Archbishop Riordan

The two sport athlete (football) plays basketball because he’s pretty good at it. He’s a key contributor to a team that plays in the WCAL. Whether he’s starting or coming off the bench he’ll rebound, block some shots, defend the other teams post players. He’s a big body with a soft touch inside, and 3pt range on the outside.
