We are rounding into crunch time in the season, with playoff time right around the corner. This year features a ton of parity, with teams fighting for their playoff lives. Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games, however, it’s usually the little details that decide championships. Several teams will be depending on key players to become stars in their roles. In our midweek report, we break down some key role players for 4A championship contenders.

[player_tooltip player_id="986968" first="Jamison" last="McCall"] 5’11 CG Spring Valley 2024 - Spring Valley has all the pieces to take home a 4A crown. You can make the argument, that McCall is the most important. The CG provides several skills that help the Grizzlies win games, he’s a shooter, a perimeter defender and he provides additional ballhandling. When he is on, SV looks like the best team in the conference.

[player_tooltip player_id="800966" first="Andrick" last="Santillan"] 6’4 SG Cheyenne 2022 - Cheyenne is one of the more experienced teams. Perhaps no player highlights that more than Santillan. The senior guard provides a lift with his size, three-point shooting, and playmaking. They are led in scoring by Senior forwards [player_tooltip player_id="859657" first="Donavon" last="Webster"] and [player_tooltip player_id="1338397" first="David" last="Tinner"], when Santillan is rolling with those guys the Desert Shields become a tough out.

[player_tooltip player_id="985628" first="Giali" last="Chapman"] 6’3 SG Mojave 2023 (featured image) - It’s hard to pinpoint one key role player for a deep, Rattlers club, however Chapman is a good pick. At this point, his scoring is almost a bonus because of what he brings on the defensive end. The junior guard is one of the best thieves in the state, averaging over three steals per game.

[player_tooltip player_id="856644" first="TJ" last="Brown"] 5’11 CG Las Vegas 2023 - I’m a firm believer that the ceiling of the Wildcats will depend on what Brown provides. The CG is one of the top two-way players in the conference but will need to be on point with his offensive production. He provides a dimension that other teams just don’t have, as he is a quality slasher, defender, shooter, and playmaker for his sqaud.

[player_tooltip player_id="1286637" first="Jeron" last="Haynes"] 6’2 SG Silverado 2022 - Haynes has quietly put together a solid season for the Skyhawks. He’ll have to step up his game even more as the playoffs approach. He serves several roles for the squad, all of which relieve pressure off all world, PG [player_tooltip player_id="1286525" first="Kenyon" last="Giles"]. Haynes spaces the floor with his shooting, provides an additional scoring punch with his 1 v 1 ability, and like all the Skyhawks, is counted on for tough defense.

[player_tooltip player_id="985624" first="Ephram" last="Ezidiegwu"] 6’5 C Bonanza 2023 - Ezidiegwu may be the ultimate glue guy. That’s a pretty good compliment for a guy averaging 7 and 5. His size and interior defense is immeasurable, as he will have to defend and rebound at a high level for the Bengals. Overall he has shown that he has the ability to do those two things consistently and at a high level, helping Bonanza to the #1 4A rankings.

[player_tooltip player_id="1020764" first="Donte" last="Turner"] 6’3 SF Cimarron 2022 - Don’t look now, but the Spartans are in first place in their division. If they are to go all the way, they will need Turner to contribute. Turner is perhaps the most versatile player in the conference with his ability to play 1-4 on both the defensive and offensive ends of the floor. His defense and ballhandling will be key if the Spartans are to make a run at the title.
