Beulah, ND - The Miners started the year highly ranked in our Power Rankings here at PHD. However, they had a few injuries and they dealt with some health issues/sickness which led to them picking up a few L’s early on. It seems like they are healthy and back to full strength. It has certainly shown, Beulah is currently on a 12 game win streak. The Miners are led by one of the best coaches in North Dakota, Jeremy Brandt. It just so happens that their All-State guard and likely Mr. Basketball candidate is the coach’s son, [player_tooltip player_id="812226" first="Trey" last="Brandt"]. Trey has had a phenomenal career and it would be fun to see him and the Miners make another State Tournament appearance in his senior season. This Friday, the Miners have a revenge game against Hazen who took down Beulah early in the season. Tournament time is right around the corner and the Miners have a clutch performer in [player_tooltip player_id="812226" first="Trey" last="Brandt"]. Tune in on Friday night to Hazen vs. Beulah, it should be a fun one! Read below for player stats, Coach Brandt comments, and the Miners scores/schedule.

Miner Chat with Coach Jeremy Brandt

PHD: You have one game left in the regular season, how does the playoff situation look for your team?

Coach Brandt: "We have one game left with Hazen, it is not a region game so our region regular season is over, we will be the #1 seed going into the region tournament."

PHD: Who are some of your most improved players this season?

Coach Brandt: "Trey and Trapper have been consistent for us, Trapper’s scoring has gone up as he has gotten healthy again and he is shooting the ball well, [player_tooltip player_id="1144977" first="Trace" last="Beauchamp"] has really been playing well lately, over the last 5 games he is averaging 13 pts, and 6 reb and is shooting 65% from 2pt fg and 41% from 3 pt fg, [player_tooltip player_id="1186849" first="Jack" last="Koppelsloen"] continues to defend the ball well and makes a lot of hustle plays and we are getting very good contributions from our bench guys in [player_tooltip player_id="1144979" first="Champ" last="Hettich"], [player_tooltip player_id="1186851" first="Brooks" last="Vigesaa"] and 8th graders Braylon Schirado and [player_tooltip player_id="1355919" first="Bennett" last="Larson"]."

PHD: Who have been a few of your best defenders and why?

Coach Brandt: "[player_tooltip player_id="1186849" first="Jack" last="Koppelsloen"] has been doing a good job of pressuring the ball, he is quick enough to stay in front of guys and usually contain the ball, Champ and Trace are able to use their length to cause some problems and our overall team defense has improved since early in the season. [player_tooltip player_id="1186850" first="Tarren" last="Larson"] and [player_tooltip player_id="1186851" first="Brooks" last="Vigesaa"] have done a better job guarding posts and also being able to go out and chase someone on the perimeter."

PHD: Who is your "go-to" guy when you need a big basket and why?

Coach Brandt: "[player_tooltip player_id="812226" first="Trey" last="Brandt"] is our go-to guy, he has had such a knack for hitting big shots throughout his career whether it’s a game-winner or a shot to put the game into overtime, he has done it multiple times and I can’t count how many shots he’s hit to end a quarter or half, and if he doesn’t take the shot he will find who is open and make the right play."

PHD: What have been a few of the most fun moments of the season?

Coach Brandt: "I think to see our growth as a team where we are now from where we started the year, we really struggled with some things early in the season, mainly defensively and confidence and I think we have improved quite a bit in those areas, our younger guys that didn’t have any varsity experience have figured out how hard they need to play every night and that they can’t take plays off. It has been fun to watch Trey and Trapper almost in a way coach the younger guys, encourage them to shoot more and be more aggressive and just be good leaders has been huge for us. We never expected that the two eighth-graders would be contributing at the varsity level either, they have been nice surprises for us. Trey breaking the school scoring record and going over 2000 points was a fun moment as well."

PHD: What are your goals for the rest of the season?

Coach Brandt: "We have one game left so we would like to finish on a strong note, stay healthy and continue to play as we have been, I think we are playing our best basketball right now so hopefully that continues as we get into the region tournament in a couple of weeks, I think our region tournament is going to be very competitive with a number of teams having a chance to win it."
