During the last week in December there were multiple tournaments being played all around Northern California. PH was in attendance on 3 different days at 3 different gyms. Here’s our list of 2023 players who PH thought stood out at the 3 tournaments we took in.

[player_tooltip player_id="951933" first="Brandon" last="Bento-Jackson"] 5’11 G of Arcata

Bento-Jackson, a solid guard with good speed, who’s naturally driven to give his best effort on the court. He likes to play fast pushing the ball in transition, but can settle things when needed in the half-court game. He has good vision and passing skills, but is most dangerous when he’s forcing defenders to guard against the deep 3. He uses a nice step back, and side step at times putting up 3’s.

Gytis Gervickas 6’1 SG of San Domenico

They Call him GG. He goes into scoring mode when he’s on the court with a team that doesn’t have much size and might struggle to get wins. Nonetheless GG understands he has to be aggressive when he has the ball in his hands. He’s a tough competitor who scored 15pts in the first quarter and 27 for the game with four 3’s, and strong finishes off two in the paint.

Thomas Woeber 6’4 W/F of University

Woeber came off the bench for spot duty. Quality over quantity, he did enough for us to put him on the watch list. A solid body player who had good cuts to the basket, he could use his dribble to get into the paint from the perimeter for kick-outs or paint jumpers. He plays hard on defense and goes after rebounds.

Trey Knight 6’0 SG of Westmoor

It was our first look at Knight who’s probably one of the better 3-Pt shooters we didn’t know about. He takes good shots, and will hit 3’s from the top, wings, and corner. He’ll come off screens, spot up in the corner for catch 3’s, and use one dribble to pull-up from deep range in transition. He had seven 3’s, and 23pts when we were there.

[player_tooltip player_id="950892" first="George" last="Gale"] 6’7 W/F of Branson

We recently found out Gale is a two sport athlete (football, QB) He’s a tall slender player with good length who works inside for this team, but can operate on the perimeter as well. He’s done well playing inside defending, going after blocks and rebounds. He has good footwork, a paint jumper, jump hook, and he uses his length to score. He's an important piece for this team

[player_tooltip player_id="951340" first="Ains" last="Fish"] 6’5 F of Redwood

Fish shows a versatile skill set when we’re in attendance. He’s a competitor that might not stuff the stat sheet with points, but he’ll fight for rebounds, defend hard, and deliver solid passing from the post, and perimeter. He see’s the court well. He could be that glue guy every team needs, but he’ll get points. He’ll hit a 3 and show some toughness inside.

[player_tooltip player_id="1116239" first="John" last="Squire"] 6’8 F/PF of Saint Ignatius

Squire has worked hard to expand his game away from the basket. He’ll hit a 3 at the top or the corners when it’s there. He does the most damage when he’s working the post area using one or two dribbles. He’s stronger showing good foot work, and toughness going up making him one of the rising post players in the NorCal 2023 class right now. A big body in the post to defend and rebound, with good passing.
