The Celina Bobcats went on the road and defeated the Melissa Cardinals 44-38 on Tuesday, and the Rock Hill Blue Hawks earned a 76-46 home victory over the Wylie East Raiders on Friday. There were several individuals who caught my attention during these contests. With that in mind, here are eight standout guard prospects from this past week’s action:
Anthony Williams | 2022 | 6’0’’ Combo Guard | Rock Hill HS – Williams set a school record for single game points Friday night, scoring 33 in a wire-to-wire dominant win. He was extremely productive at the basket, both in half court sets and in transition, showing good burst when accelerating past defenders as well as excellent body control when finishing in traffic. The senior guard kept his foot on the gas throughout the contest, staying in attack mode and never allowing Wylie East to make any sort of push in the second half. He was efficient from three-point land too, exhibiting that he could drain the long ball while spotting up and off the bounce.
B.J. Hooper B.J. Hooper 6'2" | CG Prosper Rock Hill | 2023 State TX | 2023 | 6’2’’ Point Guard | Rock Hill HS – Hooper provided steady production vs. Wylie East. The junior guard saw the floor very well and displayed tremendous decision-making skills while playing within the flow of the game. He was responsible for some gorgeous assists and some high IQ passes. Hooper also flashed some explosiveness on offense with a timely cut and dunk, proving that he can finish above the rim. He also knocked down a couple of triples. He put together a really nice all-around showing on offense, ending the night with 10 points, four rebounds, and five assists.
Cooper St. Aubin | 2024 | 6’0’’ Combo Guard | Celina HS – St. Aubin showcased fantastic ball handling on Tuesday while playing with good pace. He possesses enough wiggle to create his own shot from the outside, and he did exactly that vs. Melissa when burying a step back three in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to swing the momentum back in Celina’s favor. He went 4-for-4 from the foul line shortly after to seal the win, further showcasing his willingness and ability to perform when the game is on the line. Additionally, St. Aubin had some crafty finishes on dribble drives. He finished the game with 11 points.
Kerry Alexander | 2022 | 6’0’’ Point Guard | Melissa HS – Alexander and Melissa got off to a slow start on Tuesday, but he and his team were able to bounce back and make it a competitive game. He knocked down a pair of threes, showcasing that he is capable shooter from the outside when he can get his shots up in rhythm. That said, his finishing when attacking the basket off the dribble was the highlight of his performance. The senior guard was responsible for some acrobatic finishes at the rim, showing that he can make mid-air adjustments and consistently finish with both hands. He accounted for 16 points and eight rebounds.
Hudson Czarnecki | 2022 | 6’1’’ Point Guard | Melissa HS – Czarnecki is a solid three-point shooter and a capable all-around contributor on offense, but it was his defense that caught my eye on Tuesday. He was stout on the perimeter, continuously working to keep his man in front of him. He was productive at that end too, recording four blocks, some of which were the result of hustling back in transition while others were simply fundamentally good defensive plays. Moreover, it’s worth pointing out that Czarnecki recorded six steals in a 19-point win over Gainesville on Friday, rounding out a stellar week of defensive play.
Justin Maina Justin Maina 5'9" | PG Melissa | 2022 TX | 2022 | 5’9’’ Point Guard | Melissa HS – Maina is a “what do you need” guy. He can morph his game to provide whatever is required from him. I got to see him put up an outstanding shooting performance last season where he drilled a plethora of deep threes. I saw a different style of play from him on this go-around. He was smooth as a ball handler, generous as a facilitator, and stingy as a perimeter defender. Although the senior floor general didn’t add anything in the scoring column, his impact on the game was still felt.
Anthony Overstreet | 2024 | Shooting Guard | Wylie East HS – Overstreet is a volume scorer with a high motor and a fearless mindset. He wasn’t afraid to go at anyone when attacking off the dribble vs. Rock Hill on Friday. The Wylie East guard plays downhill and is a tough-nosed guy who can produce with his sheer will alone. Beyond that, Overstreet is a capable three-point shooter with solid range, evidenced by some efficient outside shooting in the fourth quarter.
Corleone Dandridge Corleone Dandridge 6'5" | SG Sunrise Christian | 2024 KS | 2023 | 6’4’’ Shooting Guard | Wylie East HS – Dandridge played down low defensively out of necessity, but he did a very good job of defending the opposing teams’ post and wing players, displaying outstanding defensive versatility. He possesses great length, can handle the ball comfortably, and is a capable three-point shooter from the catch. This is the modern-day ideal recruit. He has size, skill, and can do a variety of things at both ends of the floor. There is a high ceiling there if Dandridge continues to develop and refine his game.
