As we head into the year 2022, we will take a look at some of the best available 2022 players in the state. We will start at the guard position, as there’s plenty of those to go around.

We’ll look at five players from each area and position that coaches at all levels looking for a player should keep an eye out for. Here’s five 2022 wings in the Western and Central areas of Virginia that need more love.

[player_tooltip player_id="1107825" first="Carmelo" last="Pacheco"] | 6’4” | Spotswood

Pacheco is putting up huge numbers so far this season, as his coach says he’s having the best statistical season in Spotswood history, and he comes from a school that has produced many college basketball players at multiple levels. The 6’4” wing is a lights out shooter from deep who is consistent and has good range, he has good feel on both ends of the floor and he’s bought in defensively and on the glass making him productive across the board.

[player_tooltip player_id="1217464" first="Conner" last="Tilley"] | 6’4” | Lord Botetourt

Tilley has come on the last two years and shown that he’s one of the top shooters in the state, as he consistently fills it up from deep and has good size to do so. He’s the prototypical shooter as he has a quick release and deep range, and he’s the type of player that when he makes one he has a chance to ring off multiple in a row and go on a run by himself.

[player_tooltip player_id="815602" first="Piercen" last="Young"] | 6’3” | VES

Young is a little bit different than the other guys on this list, as while he thrives at the three he makes decisions that are similar to a point guard with his terrific IQ and feel for the game. He plays with a good motor on both ends and has some grit and toughness to him, he can knock it down from deep and in the midrange and he’s a good rebounder for his size and position as well.

[player_tooltip player_id="1107848" first="Maleek" last="Richardson"] | 6’4” | Hargrave

Richardson may not look like a wing with his frame that’s more like a forward, but he has all the game you see in a prototypical wing as he can create shots for himself and others as well. He’s surprisingly shifty off the bounce and can get to spots on the floor, he can score it from multiple levels and he’s a walking mismatch that’s tough to game plan for.

Owen Dawyot | 6’3” | Cave Spring

Dawyot is one of SWVA’s most underrated players, as he consistently produces in a number of ways and makes winning plays on both ends of the floor. He’s a strong wing who can knock down shots consistently, he’s great in help side defense and he’ll make all the hustle plays and play efficiently when he’s on the floor.
