State Preview Classic; Sophomore Standouts (Pt. 1)

ONTARIO — The annual State Preview Classic hosted by Harvey Kitani had a co-host this year in Colony high school and coach Jerry DeFabiis. The always-loaded event had some of the top SoCal high school programs and prospects line it up for an eight game event. Below are the game results and first set of top performers from the sophomore class.

Rancho Verde 61, Oak Hills 51
St. Francis 64, Long Beach Poly 60
Rolling Hills Prep 68, Saugus 58
Los Altos 61, Hillcrest 50
St. Anthony 60, Capistrano Valley Christian 59
Harvard-Westlake 79, Birmingham 55
Etiwanda 53, Colony 52
Corona Centennial 72, Crean Lutheran 57

Channing Cade, Etiwanda - The wiry 6-foot-7 wing/forward is another long term prospect to keep an eye on coming out of an always-loaded Etiwanda underclass. Cade is still a raw all-around prospect but did flash some intriguing upside on the offensive end. Cade has a developing inside-out skill-set with touch to 17-feet and the three-point line in addition to his ability to score around the basket with touch.

Darrell Morris, Crean Lutheran - Morris is a lightning quick guard whose speed and creativity with the ball allows him to push the tempo and thrive in the transition setting. Though slight of build at 5-feet-10, the point guard has the ability to finish craftily over big men around the basket. The biggest improvement in Morris’ game over the last year or so is his decision-making both as a passer and with his shot selection on the perimeter.

Eric Freeny, Corona Centennial - Freeny was plugged into the starting lineup for the injured [player_tooltip player_id="994973" first="Devin" last="Williams"] and his toughness and physicality inside proved to be a necessary presence. The 6-foot-4, 185-pound lefty held his own when defending the Crean Lutheran front line which featured 6-foot-9 [player_tooltip player_id="954242" first="Koat" last="Keat"] and 6-foot-10 James Agany. Freeny made it tough for them to create space inside for interior touches and blocked out and rebounded well for his size.

Jermaine Washington, Jr., Rancho Verde - The Mustangs head coach Johnny Dukes raves about what Washington brings to the table as a sophomore and discussed how great of a future the 6-foot point guard has within his program. Washington has a feel for the game well beyond his years and is lightning quick with the ball while remaining under control to make good decisions on the break. Washington is definitely a 2024 prospect Division 1 programs should begin tracking.
