Matt Imig Matt Imig 6'0" | CG Aswaubenon | 2022 State WI – 2022 – G – Ashwaubenon
As a shooter, you need a short-term memory. That’s exactly what Imig had on Friday. The senior guard did not shoot the ball well in the first half, scoring just two points, and missed a lot of clean looks. Imig ended up scoring nine points in the second half on three triples, including the game-winner with roughly 25 seconds remaining. Imig did a great job of coming off screens all night. The 5-foot-11 guard, who can play on and off the ball, has a noticeable calm demeanor about him as a shooter. His shot is never rushed, his feet are always square, and his release looks the same every time. Aside from his outside shooting, what makes Imig a nice small school prospect is his quickness on the ball and ability to hit gaps. Imig has the ball on a string, can penetrate into tight areas, and finish at top-end speed.
Nate Forystek Nate Forystek 6'7" | PF Bay Port | 2022 State WI – 2022 – PF – Bay Port
For a while, Bay Port really rode Forystek, especially when Ashwaubenon was surging in the second half. The North Dakota State football commit scored 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. The Jaguars couldn’t match up with Forystek 1-on-1 on the block and he took advantage with some powerful moves. At 6-foot-7, 240 pounds, Forystek can have some dominant stretches in the paint, but he’s also got some skill and a few different post moves he can rely on. Didn’t show it on Friday, but Forystek has also worked hard on his outside shot and and been somebody that can knock it down if left open and even handle the ball a bit on the perimeter.
A.J. Lieuwen A.J. Lieuwen 6'0" | CG Bay Port | 2023 State WI – 2023 – G – Bay Port
Would have liked to see Lieuwen stay aggressive in the second half, but with the way Ashwaubenon was trapping, there wasn’t many opportunities to dribble penetrate and over-dribbling often got guys in trouble. Lieuwen finished with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting. A quick, skilled guard, Lieuwen does a great job of initiating early offense. A smooth ball handler that can play to the ground and explode out of his breaks, Lieuwen is tough to stay in front of. He’s also got one of the better pull-up games in the state and if a defender doesn’t have a hand up, Lieuwen will step in and let it fly. There’s true combo guard ability here as well. Lieuwen is a score-first guard, but possesses floor vision and a feel for the game to handle the point duties.
Marcus Tomashek Marcus Tomashek 6'3" | SG Ashwaubenon | 2022 State WI – 2022 – W – Ashwaubenon
Tomashek wasn’t given much room to operate in the first half as Bay Port really hounded and chased him through everything. Felt like every time Tomashek caught, there was someone in his shorts. His coaching staff made some great adjustments after halftime, often using Tomashek as a screener to force his man to help and allow Tomashek to float freely to the perimeter. Tomashek made some early rhythm 3-pointers in the final period. From that point…it was on. Loved how Tomashek responded when the defense started to get physical with him. Tomashek used that to his advantage by working in his step-back jumper and also embracing the contact by driving into it and getting to the foul line. While he scored 34 points, including 23 in the second half, Tomashek made winning plays in other areas. The Michigan commit took two charges, including one that stole a possession back for the Jaguars with under a minute to play, a possession they used for the game-winning basket. He also had an assist that led to a three-point play to grab a 52-51 lead with five minutes left. Turning up the pressure in the second half, Tomashek also generated a handful of steals on well-timed traps in the backcourt that sparked the initial comeback. He also added seven rebounds and two assists in the win.
Vincent Vandervest Vincent Vandervest 6'4" | SF Bay Port | 2023 State WI – 2023 – SF – Bay Port
Give Vandervest a lot of credit. He was tasked with defending Tomashek. If you can slow down the Michigan Tech commit, Bay Port had a pretty strong chance of winning. That’s easier said than done, but Vandervest was up for the challenge made Tomashek work for everything he got in the first half. Vandervest was right there on the catch and called for intuitive switches when he got picked off on screens. Vandervest didn’t spend much time on Tomashek in the final period, but did convert a number of key baskets that kept Bay Port in the lead on multiple occasions. The junior wing had a team-high 17 points on just 10 shots. He also grabbed four rebounds and had three blocks. An athletic slasher, Vandervest looks much more skilled than he did this summer and showed some pretty impressive counter moves to put defenders on skates. A plus athlete, Vandervest has some sneaky explosiveness when he gets near the rim as well.
