As a point guard, ideally you may want some speed and certainly ball control. A center would have great length, height and the ability to use it. When players fit the mold of that position they are in a better spot generally to succeed. Here are some of the best forwards I saw this past week.
Davian Lechuga #52 – Cuba High Rams – SF/PF
Davian is a disciplined, patient forward yet he works hard and is aggressive when attacking the paint. He is a relentless attacker with a nice body frame that can cause havoc and draw fouls. This athletic player will not stop and is a force when driving to the paint. On top of that I saw him hit some nice floating jump shots in traffic. The mid range game is certainly there. When I spoke to Davian after the game he said that he possesses great leadership skills by bringing up his teammates always no matter the circumstances. He also said he loves to hustle hard and work on shooting always. This versatile forward could be a nice force in the lane.
Jacob Gergen #25 – Hope Christian Huskies – SF/PF
Jacob is a forward that can play inside and out. He can play down low in the paint in a variety of ways but also hit threes if tasked to do so. In my notes, I wrote that he had a smooth shooting stroke with nice form for a forward position. I saw him box out and get a nice rebound off of a free-throw miss. I also wrote that he can finish in transition and is hard to get scored on in the paint. This went along with what he told me about himself after the game which was that he loves to fight for the ball and is not afraid to display intensity. I was impressed by his versatility and ability to do many things well on the court.
Psalmon Kegler #44 – Cleveland HS Storm – SF/PF
Psalmon is an unselfish player who is not ball greedy and does anything for the team. That’s not to say he can’t score because I saw him get a couple “And 1’s” at his game. I saw him working some post moves and hustling hard in the paint. The team player follows the ball well with his nice eye coordination. A player that can overpower defenders with his strength inside as he works hard for rebounds. He understands zone defense extremely well and has the ability to take charges. His quick closeouts on defense led to some turnovers by the offense. Nice vertical defense along with sliding on defense. Overall, I feel like he is a tough minded player that can also play unselfish in the right spots. His physical strength could make him uncanny as well.
Brayden Giron #22 – Hope Christian Huskies – SF/PF
The tall frame forward can nail threes with ease, gather steals in transition as well as finish in transition. Long arms to get boards is what I wrote in my notes and doesn’t mind taking jump shots at all. A shooter indeed as he said after the game that he loves to work on shooting all the time. He said his crisp passing makes him dangerous and an assist getter. Good communication with a fiery defensive attitude. I saw him make two clutch free-throws at the end of his game which is always an added bonus. To me, having the long arms and the ability to hit the three ball is what could make Brayden very dangerous. I was impressed and happy to meet Brayden.
