Check out my breakdowns on the top players in attendance at the 2021 VYPE Holiday Invitational down in Houston this Christmas break!

Ja’varius Thompson 2024 6’0 Nimitz High School

Ja’varius is a fearless guard who has a knack with finishing with the best of them in the paint. He is great at attacking downhill and putting his body on the line to put the other team into foul trouble and to get off shots at the rim. I was very impressed with the amount of gravity and attention he draws when he has the basketball, and how good he was at finding the open teammate when he felt an extra defender. He is a great set shooter when he gets a chance to set his feet and play off the ball. Nimitz is a team to keep your eye on, they have two especially good sophomore guards in Thompson and [player_tooltip player_id="1139315" first="Eric" last="Woods"] that could make the leap next year....

[player_tooltip player_id="958615" first="Sean" last="Elkinton"] 2022 6’7 Crosby High School

Sean is a highly skilled big man who can punish you in a number of ways. He can use his brute size and strength to back you down in the post and bunny hook you to death, or get you on an island in the mid post and create offense or step back beyond the arc and knock down shots when given the time to catch and shoot. Elkington was one of the most polished big men in attendance at the entire tournament and thrived at all three levels of the floor. He is one to keep watching next year as he takes his talents to the next level, he is currently committed to St. Edwards University in Austin.

Brandon Porter 2022 6’0 Cy-Fair High School

Brandon is an elite shooting guard who does not need much time or space to set his feet and knock down a shot between a defender’s eyes. Porter flies off of screens and is great at quickly setting his feet and getting his hands ready to catch and shoot. He is confident from seemingly anywhere beyond the arc and even has the ability to space the floor to the new found fourth level of the floor, adding a new level of space for his teammates. He is great at finding his open teammates whenever he begins to draw a bunch of attention and displayed some high level passing ability. I would like to see continued development with his shot off the dribble.

Quentin Beverly 2022 6’1 Cy- Park High School

Quentin is a lightning quick point guard who thrives at getting into his spots, especially in the midrange. His ability to quickly get to the elbow puts a ton of pressure on the defense, especially with the consistency in which he knocks it down. As the defenders get back on their heels, Beverly has the speed to get right on by them to the rim. When he feels a second defender he is good at making the right read and getting off timely passes to his open teammates. I would like to see him work on his ability to threaten the defense from beyond the arc off the dribble, it should not be hard with as good of a shooter he is from the midrange and it would open up his game even more if he begins to knock down the three ball at a high clip.

Ethan To 2023 5’11 Fort Bend Austin High School

Ethan is a two way combo guard who thrives on knocking down big shots and coming up with steals to run in transition. He has fearless NBA level range and the confidence to pair with it. He thrives at knocking down shots off the catch from atop the key, on the wings and even in the corners. I was really impressed with his overall shot making ability. I would like to see him work to get into his spots in the midrange with more consistency, he is a dynamic shooter who will get more and more attention as the season continues on, and if he can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim or even a simple one to two dribble pull up in the midrange, he can become that much more deadly.

[player_tooltip player_id="889575" first="Chancellor" last="White"] 6’6 2022 Foster High School

Chancellor is a large combo guard who can really do it all on both ends of the floor. His athletic ability is perfectly paired with his ability to shake defenders with a live dribble, go coast to coast and finish on the break or lock up high level guards. He is great at working without the ball, and knows when to cut back door when his defender turns for a split second for a free dunk at the rim. He is also great at quickly getting his feet set underneath him and always have his hands ready to receive a pass. He even displayed some high level shot making off the dribble, especially when getting to his one to two dribble pull ups.
