Twenty high school teams from all over Texas participated in this midseason tournament, and although I wasn’t able to see every team play, I was really impressed with every school I did have the opportunity to watch. With that in mind, here are seven guard prospects that caught my eye during the event:
Miles Gibson Miles Gibson 6'6" | CG Allen | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 6’6’’ Small Forward | Allen HS – I was really impressed with Gibson’s vertical ability. He threw down some highlight-reel dunks in pregame and flushed a two-handed dunk from a standstill in the first half of the contest. The Allen wing is plenty athletic enough to finish above the rim with power while operating in the post. His leaping ability showed up in his rebounding and rim protection too. He times his jumps well and explodes off the floor. Beyond that, Gibson has some guard-like skills, such as the ability to handle the ball in the open court and deliver accurate passes in transition.
Christian Bradshaw | 2022 | 6’2’’ Small Forward | Clear Brook HS – Bradshaw possesses a mature frame and excellent athleticism. While he is not the tallest, he is so strong in the post and can outmuscle opponents down low. He plays with physicality at both ends. The Clear Brook senior is a tremendous defender who is going to battle it out with whoever he is tasked with guarding. He was able to convert steals into easy buckets for he and his teammates on numerous occasions. He finished his Monday night matchup vs. Little Elm with 16 points and a victory.
Yai Kolnyang | 2022 | 6’2’’ Small Forward/Shooting Guard | Mesquite Horn HS – Kolnyang was not shy about getting his shots off vs. Frisco Memorial on Monday. He is a volume scorer and a fearless shooter who can score from all three levels. The 2022 Horn prospect looked good creating his own shot from the mid-range area. He also finished well at the rim when attacking off the dribble, showing a particular fondness for the scoop finish. Additionally, Kolnyang has some twitchy quickness to his game when handling the ball.
Brennan Ray | 2022 | 6’2’’ Small Forward/Power Forward | Rockwall HS – Ray is a fascinating prospect. He is a hybrid H-back on the football team, and that is clearly visible in his bulky build. The two-sport athlete is deceptively explosive for a player his size, as well as a confident ball handler on the perimeter and in transition. You just don’t see a lot of guys like him. He finishes through contact underneath the basket, evidenced by some strong And-1 finishes, and displayed good footwork in the post as well. This guy is the definition of a versatile athlete.
Kordrick Turner Kordrick Turner 6'7" | C Sulphur Springs | 2023 State #296 Nation TX | 2023 | 6’7’’ Power Forward | Sulphur Springs HS – Turner is a presence in the paint. He dominated the early parts of his evening matchup vs. Lake Travis, scoring on the block, finishing a putback tip, and knocking down a turnaround jump shot in the high post. He also moves pretty well for his size which was highlighted by a nice take across the lane for a layup. The Sulphur Springs big man can space the floor with his shooting from mid to long range too. Furthermore, Turner was solid on the glass at both ends and did a good job of sealing off opponents in the post on offense.
Hudson Greer Hudson Greer 6'7" | SG Austin Lake Travis | 2025 State #50 Nation TX | 2025 | 6’8’’ Small Forward/Power Forward | Lake Travis HS – Greer operated as the sixth man for Lake Travis Monday night. He has terrific size and length, and a good amount of skill to go along with it. The freshman forward is a crafty scorer at the basket, showing that he can finish above the rim with power or below with finesse and solid footwork. It’s impressive to see the variety in his arsenal of moves at such a young age. In addition, Greer can stretch the floor with his shooting and is a solid ball handler in the open court. I can only imagine how good he is going to be in three or four years if this is his starting point.
