Continue ReadingThe third week of the high school season saw several top-level battles including a day of monster matchups on Saturday at Southport in the Forum Tipoff Classic. For me, I saw a battle of two Evansville powerhouses in Evansville North and Evansville Reitz and a top-level Sectional 8 showdown between Fishers and Carmel on Saturday night. Let’s take a look at some of the top forwards and wings from these games.
Player Evaluations
Jalen Haralson Jalen Haralson 6'7" | PG La Lumiere | 2025 #8 Nation IN (Fishers) – 6’6″ 2025 Wing: Haralson is a big guard with a ton of length, and although he is listed as a guard, he is going to be more of a wing. Even as a freshman, he showed off some very impressive touch around the rim. Haralson did struggle with the length of Sam Orme Sam Orme 6'9" | SF Carmel | 2023 State #196 Nation IN on the offensive end of the floor, and this caused him to become sped up and turn the ball over. However, these are freshman mistakes that you will live with as he continues to develop into a top-level player.
Isaac Higgs Isaac Higgs 6'2" | PG Evansville Reitz | 2023 State IN (Evansville Reitz) – 6’2″ 2023 Wing: Higgs is another guard who looked more like a wing in this one, but his top-level shooting and scoring ability from all over led to a 27 point performance in the win. Higgs is very good on the catch and shoot and has a nice shooting stroke from the outside. He also showed off a solid pull-up jumper in the lane, and he used his aggressiveness to get into the bucket and finish through or around contact.
Sam Orme Sam Orme 6'9" | SF Carmel | 2023 State #196 Nation IN (Carmel) – 6’6″ 2023 SF: Orme has a ton of the length for the wing spot, and his effort on the defensive end of the floor was huge for the Fishers. He was able to nearly shut down Jalen Haralson Jalen Haralson 6'7" | PG La Lumiere | 2025 #8 Nation IN all game. Shooting the ball, Orme is great on the catch and shoot, and the ball comes out of his hand incredibly smooth. He also has nice touch around the rim. Orme still has room to grow, but his length is something that cannot be taught at any level. He will be playing power five basketball in the future for sure.
Gavin Schippert Gavin Schippert 6'6" | PF Evansville Reitz | 2022 State IN (Evansville Reitz) – 6’7″ 2022 PF: Schippert is a physical big inside who seemed to dominate the paint all game. He showed off some nice post moves inside, and he was able to finish through contact for a couple of buckets. He was also a vacuum on the glass, grabbing eight boards in the win. Schippert struggled from the outside, going just 1-6 from three, but the way that he was shooting makes me think that he can knock them down.
Jeffrey Simmons Jeffrey Simmons 6'7" | PF Fishers | 2022 State IN (Fishers) – 6’7″ 2022 PF: Simmons is a powerful big who looks the part of the tight end that he will be playing at Miami of Ohio next season. On the basketball court, he definitely kept Fishers in this ball game. Simmons is a physical scorer who seeks out contact and plays through it, and this allowed him to get to the line 9 times in the game. Simmons would finish with 19 points in the loss and grabbed half of Fishers’ rebounds in one of the more efficient outings that I have seen from a player.
Charlie Williams Charlie Williams 6'10" | PF Carmel | 2022 State #220 Nation IN (Carmel) – 6’8″ 2022 PF: Williams had a very impressive game without scoring a lot of points. He would add 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in a game that really showed his potential. Williams has some nice vision out of the post, and he was able to set up his teammates for some easy buckets. He also has unworldly touch around the rim. With his unreachable ability and the way that he hustles on the court, William & Mary has the potential to be able to mold him into a very impressive big in the future.
