We at Prep Hoops Indiana strive to be in the gym more than anyone. We don’t just cover the big weekend tournaments or the marquee shootout events. Instead, our staff brings you coverage EVERY night of games throughout the state from all different levels. This week so far, I’ve had the opportunity to get in the gym for Bishop Chatard vs. George Washington on Tuesday night and then North Central vs. Crispus Attucks Wednesday evening. Here are some notes from each of those games along with a few player evaluations. Stay tuned for more evaluations in our typical Sunday evaluation dump.

Bishop Chatard 60 George Washington 46

The athleticism and pressure defense of George Washington bothered the Trojans early. A lot of that could be because it was Chatard’s first game of the season, but it was clear they were put back on their heels early. The Continentals led after the first quarter and took a 26-22 advantage into the halftime break. Early on, they were getting to the foul line and creating some easy baskets off of turnovers. It took Chatard guard [player_tooltip player_id="1143910" first="A.J." last="Roseman"] a bit to get going, but once he did it turned things around for the Trojans.

In the second half, Roseman got to the basket consistently showing off a variety of finishes. He also would put the game on ice down the stretch with his foul shooting. The Trojans used a 17-5 third quarter to flip the game and were able to cruise to the eventual 60-46 victory at that point.

Roseman, a senior point guard, led all scorers with 18 points for Bishop Chatard. Kevin Wells added nine points while T.J. Ford chipped in 8 points and 6 rebounds. For George Washington, it was a balanced scoring attack led by Ammon Burns and Travis Ballance who each scored 13 points.

North Central 70 Crispus Attucks 59

This was a back-and-forth affair that went down to the wire at North Central Wednesday night. In front of several college coaches from various levels, these two Indianapolis powerhouses went toe-to-toe. The Panthers would take the lead early thanks to a three-pointer from Blake Fleming and a couple of buckets from [player_tooltip player_id="868259" first="Joey" last="Brown"]. North central led 15-13 after the first quarter.

Attucks would turn it on in the second quarter as 6’7" freshman center [player_tooltip player_id="1297019" first="Dezmon" last="Briscoe"] finished off an excellent first half and the duo of [player_tooltip player_id="870264" first="James" last="Smith"] and [player_tooltip player_id="870284" first="Christian" last="Nunn"] continued to get to the basket. However, a three-pointer as time expired by Fleming gave North Central a 30-28 advantage at halftime.

The Tigers of Crispus Attucks would pull ahead in the third as [player_tooltip player_id="870264" first="James" last="Smith"] really got going scoring nine points in the quarter. He was excellent off of the dribble all night long. Attucks would lead by one after three quarters. The script would quickly flip in the home team’s favor though.

North Central went on an 11-0 run to begin the fourth quarter as the Tigers didn’t get on the board until close to the 4:00 minute mark. At that point they were playing catchup and could never fully get back in it. The Panthers [player_tooltip player_id="870231" first="David" last="Lloyd"] was good down the stretch scoring six points in the fourth and they got big threes from C.J. Jolliffe and Charlie Baker. It was a balanced effort for North Central as they would improve to 3-1 on the season with a 70-59 win.

[player_tooltip player_id="868259" first="Joey" last="Brown"] led NC in scoring with 13 points while Blake Fleming and [player_tooltip player_id="870231" first="David" last="Lloyd"] added 11 and 10 points respectively. For Attucks, [player_tooltip player_id="870284" first="Christian" last="Nunn"] scored a game-high 21 points while [player_tooltip player_id="870264" first="James" last="Smith"] had 15.

Player Evaluations

[player_tooltip player_id="1143910" first="A.J." last="Roseman"] (Bishop Chatard 2022): A 6’0" athletic point guard, Roseman had a slow start to the game but really turned things on win his team needed him in the second half. He can get to the basket off of the dribble seemingly at will and is strong enough to finish around the basket while taking some contact. Will make for a good lead guard at the DIII level down the road.

Blake Fleming (North Central H.S. 2022): Fleming is a senior guard that really shot the ball well in North Central’s win Wednesday night. He has a sweet left-handed stroke and can make the pull-up off of a couple dribbles as well as the defense closes out. Playing an important role as a wing scorer for the Panthers so far this year as they are off to a 3-1 start.

[player_tooltip player_id="1158227" first="Mason" last="Lewis"] (North Central H.S. 2024): Ultra-quick, 5’9" point guard that ran the show efficiently for North Central Wednesday night. He scored nine points, but was most effective playmaking for his teammates. Lewis draws a lot of attention when he penetrates the defense and has the strength to operate inside as the defense collapses on him. One of the best guards in the 2024 class.

[player_tooltip player_id="870264" first="James" last="Smith"] (Crispus Attucks H.S. 2022): Smith is a strong, playmaking guard that can effectively play on or off of the ball. He was very effective Wednesday night attacking the basket off of the dribble and finishing around the basket. Very good finisher off of the bounce. Smith is one of the better available guards in Indiana’s 2022 class. Could be a nice addition to a program wanting a guard with size and strength that can score it.
