I was able to stop by the tournament this week and there was a lot of strong teams and good talent. Here’s a quick look at some of the top standouts from the class of 2023 that I saw.
1. Isaiah Brewington Isaiah Brewington 6'6" | PF Campbell Hall | 2023 State CA-S – Campbell Hall
Brewer is a versatile defensive player. I’ve seen him play before when he was a freshman and he’s really developed well on that end. He moves his feet well and he can recover if beat and block the shot at the rim. His mobility allows him to cover the perimeter and he can close out well on shooters. Good interior anchor. He boxes out properly and snatches up rebounds. He can get good position in the paint offensively and needs to be able to finisher a little stronger/quicker.
2. Isaiah Chappell Isaiah Chappell 6'9" | PF South Kent | 2023 State #278 Nation CA-S – Crossroads
Chappell was one of the most skilled forwards at the tournament. One of the biggest parts of his game is his passing. He draws the defense in the paint and he passes well out of the post. He moves well in the paint and can get good scoring position. He has a soft touch finishing around the rim. Consistent shooting range out to the three-point line. He’s a very good rebounder on the offensive glass.
3. Amire Jones Amire Jones 6'2" | PG Leuzinger | 2023 State CA-S – Leuzinger
Jones is a good defensive player. For a wing, he’s a good shot blocker. He has good timing on his blocks and he keeps up well with the ball-handler and meets them at the rim. Gets back defensively in transition. He’s a good rebounder and he’s able to crash the glass against bigger players. Offensively, he can drive to the rim and he draws fouls on both his shot and on the drive. A pretty good catch and shoot player from three-point range.
4. MJ Coleman – Brentwood
Coleman is a good passer/playmaker in the halfcourt. He gets to the rim off dribble penetration and he kicks the ball to open shooters. He has good vision and does a good job hitting cutters and teammates around the rim. He can dribble well under defensive pressure. He is comfortable creating shots off the dribble. In the first half of the game I saw, his shot wasn’t dropping but the motions were there. He likes the midrange shot off a couple of dribbles.
