I watched three games of the Sunshine State Preseason Classic at Westminster Academy. Other contests were held at nearby Cardinal Gibbons High School. Here is a quick rundown of the scores from Westminster.

McArthur 62, Westminster Christian 51

Blanche Ely 81, Somerset Academy Pines 40

Westminster Academy 75, Miami Southridge 67

Standouts (Part two)

[player_tooltip player_id="1316919" first="Jason" last="Mark"] - Blanche Ely

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="1316919" first="Jason" last="Mark"] has a lot of qualities at 6-foot-6. I thought the forward used his size well around the paint to finish. Specifically, Mark has the muscle to create that space. He also has the athleticism to separate off the dribble. Take both of those traits with his frame and you have a player with some skill. Mark had eleven points on the night. This is the second time I saw him after a summer showing at Calvary Christian Academy. I give Mark a passing grade in both instances.

[player_tooltip player_id="962427" first="Koree" last="Cotton"] - Miami Southridge

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="962427" first="Koree" last="Cotton"] scored a team-high 23 points against Westminster Academy. Cotton is a 6-foot-5 shooting guard that can play multiple positions. I think his ball skill and length is efficient enough to be a factor in multiple areas. Overall, it was an impressive performance from Cotton out of the gate. Florida Gulf Coast has shown interest. 6-foot-6 Elton Paige added 15 points. A takeaway for Miami Southridge moving forward would be to get consecutive stops on defense. I think that was a key factor last night. The Spartans will learn from it and end up being a very good team in Miami-Dade.

Jordan Barraza - Somerset Academy Pines

It was a tough night for the Panthers as they were doubled up by the Tigers. However, I thought a bright spot was 2022 Jordan Barraza. The 6-foot-1 shooting guard scored a team-high 13 points and knocked down three 3-pointers. I thought Barraza gave Somerset Academy Pines an offensive jolt before things started to unravel. [player_tooltip player_id="709229" first="David" last="Delancy"] IV chipped in with 12 points.

[player_tooltip player_id="829426" first="Darius" last="Tigner"] - Blanche Ely

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="829426" first="Darius" last="Tigner"] came in later in the game, but he still made his presence felt. The 6-foot-4 forward scored 12 points and used his body to crash the glass. I guess that would make sense since he plays tight end on the football field. Tigner is a big kid that will provide inside production and toughness on the floor. I remember when he was at Plantation American Heritage. This version of Tigner would swallow that one. He's definitely been in the weight room putting on power.
