As the varsity season is getting started, or already has gotten started, the State of New York will finally get to experience what should be a nearly normal basketball season. As always with every season, there’s always a handful of players who put in a mountain of work over the break, and only now have the opportunity to show it off, becoming "breakout players." Today, we take a look at some of the top candidates to break out this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="1045683" first="Taylor" last="Perlmutter"] | LaSalle | 2023

[player_tooltip player_id="1045683" first="Taylor" last="Perlmutter"] has been great in the Fall circuit for Jersey Force, and as the CHSAA season starts up, that momentum is expected to continue at LaSalle. Perlmutter has the speed and endurance to be a starting point guard and lead his team up and down the floor, and his pull-up jumper gives him a great option so it isn’t like most pass or finish guards. His defense is elite, and his playmaking is sure to set up LaSalle in a good position for the CHSAA.

[player_tooltip player_id="1125345" first="Darien" last="Gillins"] | Beacon | 2023

[player_tooltip player_id="1125345" first="Darien" last="Gillins"] has shown major improvement this summer, and it seems he will make a big impact this season. His most obvious trait is his athleticism. When you see a 6’2" guard do a 360 dunk, you know that’s a player to watch out for. He has the speed and power to be an elite finisher at the rim, and combined with his playmaking and shooting, he can be extremely effective on the offensive end.

[player_tooltip player_id="1047350" first="Delano" last="Knox"] | Arlington | 2022

In his senior year, it looks like [player_tooltip player_id="1047350" first="Delano" last="Knox"] will finally be bringing his whole scoring package to the table. His fall season for the NSS Naturals included many high scoring games, including multiple at The Hoop Group’s Fall Jam Fest. In each game, Knox showed how easy it is for him to drive to the rim and take contact, as well as create opportunities for his teammates once in there.

[player_tooltip player_id="1332824" first="Mark" last="Ostad"] | Millbrook | 2024

Ostad isn’t as old as some of these other guys, but that doesn’t mean he won’t make an impact. His shooting stroke is extremely quick and tough to defend, not to mention accurate, and as all great scorers, he is able to easily head to the rim. His finishing is on another level as well, as he can easily score with both hands.

Jeremiah Dorsey | Wilbraham & Monson | 2023

In the past 2 years, Jeremiah Dorsey has made a mindblowing transformation, and this is the year where it is expected to pay off. Dorsey has been putting on muscle, and he knows how to use it effectively and make it pay off on the court. He clearly can lead the offense and take it through the right decisions, and he does have the playmaking to set up teammates. His nice long range shot is a great way to tie his game together.
