August 30th-31st Justin Vargas and I put on the 5th annual Southwest Basketball Camp at the beautiful Phhacility in Phx, AZ.

66 players from Arizona and Texas battled it out. 8 teams with 8-9 players each.

Each team played 5 games with a possible All-Star game. The All-Star games lived up to the hype with many coaches walking away impressed with what they saw. The younger talent was pretty obvious.

We take a look at each teams players.

Here was Team Stanford:

Top-20 All-Star game

[player_tooltip player_id="827037" first="Michael" last="Saba"] Chaparral

A fast improving post player is getting more and more athletic. His first play he pulled off a drop step then flushed it down way above the rim effortlessly. He has long arms and big hands to rebound and he will block shots in his area. He can step out and hit the 3 and his ability to create his own shot with his handle makes him harder to defend. He is using more counter moves and runs the floor better. His stamina could improve moving forward.

[player_tooltip player_id="1275632" first="Lex" last="Clontz"] Cesar Chavez

The top incoming freshman at the event earned his way to the Top-20 game. He made shots from all over the court. He loves the catch-3 but he can create his own offense by putting the ball on the deck and going to work. He also showed the ability to be a very good passer down the road and maybe morph into a point forward type who has a clip from deep. He definitely plays the game from the neck up and is an instant starter in 6A for the Champions.

Top-40 All-Star game

[player_tooltip player_id="1032868" first="Drew" last="Owens"] Mesquite

A strong framed forward can play inside and out. His catch-3 is his weapon of choice but he can post up in the paint and score with putting it on the deck to create. He can fall away from his defender with a nice touch. He plays hard and is a physical banger underneath the basket. His strides he is making with his shooting and handle are definitely obvious. He is improved steadily each season.

[player_tooltip player_id="827051" first="Jamison" last="Crispin"] LFPA

A defensive point guard who makes plays. He has a huge motor with quick twitch reflexes to steal or lock up opposing guards. He loves driving the lane getting downhill and kicking it to a shooter. His passing skills have improved in the last year. He scores it inside with his speed and toughness and is a good FT shooter.

[player_tooltip player_id="1033047" first="Eli" last="Fleming"] Dysart

A strong scoring guard was awarded the top 3pt corner specialist. His catch-3 is his game with a quick trigger but he can do more. He has the mid-range game and knows how to relocate to an open spot. He runs the court and will defend on the ball. He changes speeds well and uses the floater once he gets into the lane. He should be a big factor for the Demons in 4A.

[player_tooltip player_id="1193881" first="Nic" last="Corbo"] Chaparral

A young combo guard who caught my attention. The lefty can crossover into a pull-up from mid-range or free himself to get to the basket. He is a somewhat streaky 3pt shooter but more then capable. He can hesitate and go plus he is very competitive on the ball defensively.

Top-60 All-Star game

Tarvis Edwards Jr PG 5’7 2023 Valley Vista

A lightning fast lead guard with a super tight handle and pace to his game. He is very tough on the ball defensively using impressive lateral quickness, a stronger upper body and natural speed. He has the pull-up off the dribble from mid-range and he can hit the 3 off the catch.

Joaquin Meek CG 5’10 2025 Salpointe Catholic

A quick incoming freshman from Tucson can play a little on or off the ball. He is smart player who will make extra passes. He can shoot the ball from the perimeter and seems to know his way around the court for his age. He will be one to track down South.
