Preseason 2A Player of the Year: 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="682290" first="Tanner" last="Te Slaa"], Boyden-Hull

The future South Dakota State Jackrabbit wing does a little bit of everything for the Comets, and has led them to a 2A championship and a pair of runner-up finishes in the last three years. While crosstown rival Western Christian will open the year as the favorite in the class, it's Te Slaa who opens the year as our Preseason POY selection.

First Team

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="682290" first="Tanner" last="Te Slaa"], Boyden-Hull: 21.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.9 steals, 53.1 FG%, 36.6 3P%, 81.0 FT%

A long, versatile wing with a high IQ, Te Slaa is an efficient scorer who lets the game come to him. He uses his length well on the defensive end to play passing lanes and contest shots, he gets others involved, is a good rebounder, and is a dominant three-level scoring threat who takes what is given to him.

A 6-5 combo forward who scores at a remarkably efficient clip from all three levels, Van Essen led the Wolfpack to a state record 10th state championship last season. He's a high IQ player who is a dominant offensive force and a great rebounder. Western Christian is the team to beat in 2A again this year, and it's largely because of how dominant and efficient Van Essen is.

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="682280" first="Lucas" last="Lorenzen"], Okoboji: 23.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals, 44.9 FG%, 41.8 3P%, 79.1 FT%

Speaking of dominant scorers, Lorenzen is one of the few players in the state who could pop off for 40 points on any given night. He's a big, physical combo forward who uses his strength to bully his way to the rim, and he also has a silky stroke from behind the arc. He missed a big chunk of time due to injury last year, but if he's healthy, he's going to put up eye-popping numbers for the Pioneers.

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="751418" first="Jayden" last="Mackie"], Aplington-Parkersburg: 14.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.1 steals, 50.4 FG%, 42.0 3P%

Mackie was arguably the most dominant player in Des Moines in March, when he absolutely went off at the state tournament. An athletic guard who can score in bunches, he has really improved his efficiency over his high school career, turning himself into a dominant scoring threat who is equally capable of using his quickness to get to the rim, or pulling up and burying 3s in his defender's face. He's also a talented passer who sees the floor well.

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="1158415" first="Eric" last="Mulder"], Pella Christian: 14.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 1.6 blocks, 61.8 FG%

Mulder used his only season playing grassroots ball to his advantage, pulling in a handful of Division I offers and committing to play at IPFW. A 6-9 big man who runs the floor, rebounds, and protects the rim, he is oozing with potential, especially if he can continue to extend his range.

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="682268" first="Zach" last="Erwin"], Camanche: 15.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 steals, 1.3 blocks

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="1167686" first="Caden" last="Kirkman"], Wilton: 18.6 points 11.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.4 steals, 4.3 blocks, 53.6 FG%

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="1253020" first="Zach" last="Lutmer"], Central Lyon: 20.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 2.2 steals, 58.3 FG%, 45.2 3P%

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="1158414" first="Carter" last="Harmsen"], Mid-Prairie: 18.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.1 steals, 75.2 FT%

Third Team

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="1158431" first="Landyn" last="Van Kekerix"], Rock Valley: 16.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 2.5 steals, 51.0 FG%

2022 [player_tooltip player_id="962600" first="Caleb" last="Holmes"], Hinton: 19.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals, 81.5 FT%

2023 [player_tooltip player_id="1167698" first="Jacob" last="Hargens"], Sioux Central: 19.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 57.1 FG%, 40.4 3P%, 77.8 FT%
