Our preview content resumes with a look at the Preseason All-Senior Teams for Maryland and DC. Here is a rundown of the 15 players who were selected by our team.

First Team

Darren Buchanan Jr. | Forward | Woodrow Wilson (DC)

Ayalew: Buchanan has been on the radar at Wilson since his freshman year where he played on one of the more talented teams the city has ever seen. He has since matured into a leader and a consistent producer. Rumors had swirled about Buchanan leaving the school this summer with private schools calling, but he decided to run it back one last time. Expect him to be a difference-maker each time he hits the floor.

[player_tooltip player_id="904621" first="Rodney" last="Rice"] | Guard | DeMatha (MD)

Ayalew: With [player_tooltip player_id="775338" first="Elijah" last="Hawkins"] now at Howard and Jacoi Hutchinson off to IMG, Rice could be tasked with an even more significant role than he had last season at DeMatha. He is a gym rat and should be prepared.

[player_tooltip player_id="777065" first="Tyrell" last="Ward"] | Wing | DeMatha (MD)

Ayalew: Ward was one of the rising stars of the previous season. He routinely excelled for the Stags on both ends of the floor during his junior campaign. Expectations for Ward are high heading into his senior year. There’s no reason to believe he won’t deliver.

Cam Whitmore | Forward | Archbishop Spalding (MD)

Giacubeno: Whitmore is coming off a summer where he took the nation by storm with his play throughout the various live periods. He was the best-kept secret due to COVID last spring/summer, but it didn’t take long for high major programs to fall in love with his game and potential in 2021. The Villanova commit steps into his senior campaign as the No. 1 ranked player in the state and will have Archbishop Spalding in heavy conversations as the potential favorite in the MIAA and BCL this winter.

[player_tooltip player_id="777061" first="Favour" last="Aire"] | Center | Bishop McNamara (MD)

Ayalew: Aire is generally considered to be the most dominant post-prospect in the DMV at the moment. He is a menace on the defensive end not just because of his ability to block shots but his relentless pursuit of the ball even on the perimeter. Aire has also worked hard to develop some go-to moves in the post to go along with his forceful dunk package.

Second Team

[player_tooltip player_id="837921" first="Devin" last="Dinkins"] | Guard | Gonzaga (DC)

Wilson: Dinkins is going to be asked to do a lot this year for Gonzaga and I believe he is up for the challenge. I expect Dinkins to have some crazy good numbers this year and for him to be asked to score a lot for the Purple Eagles this upcoming season.

[player_tooltip player_id="904628" first="Deon" last="Perry"] | Guard | Mt. Carmel (MD)

Giacubeno: Perry was another Baltimore prospect that used this summer’s stage to boost his reputation. The 5-foot-9 floor general is arguably the top point guard in the state with his ability to control a game both as a scorer and distributor. The Loyola (MD) commit has a high IQ when it comes to running his team and considering the number of quality transfers Mount Carmel has, they’ve entrenched themselves into the contender debate within the MIAA and BCL.

[player_tooltip player_id="837919" first="Tyson" last="Commander"] | Guard | John Carroll (MD)

Giacubeno: Commander returns for his senior season after a magical run in the BCL Playoffs last winter following the shortened regular-season schedule. Led by his long-range shot-making ability, the Patriots pulled off a massive upset against St. Frances in the title game and Commander was a key aspect of the effort. John Carroll returns the bulk of their core from the BCL run and given the progression of Commander’s game and athleticism, he’ll again be a major reason for their success.

[player_tooltip player_id="904624" first="Christian" last="Watson"] | Wing | St. John’s (DC)

Ayalew: Watson has the tools to become one of the better two-way players in the WCAC this season. He is capable of locking down a high-level wing player while also scoring 20 points a night.

[player_tooltip player_id="1215151" first="Cesar" last="Tchilombo"] | Center | John Carroll (MD)

Giacubeno: Tchilombo was last year’s BCL Defensive Player of the Year and he’ll look to repeat as such this winter after showing overall improvement over the summer. The 6-foot-9 forward is a massive presence in the paint on the defensive end by disrupting shots around the rim and rebounding at a high rate. Offensively he gives the Patriots an option on the block as a finisher and an underrated passer when double teams come his way.

Third Team

[player_tooltip player_id="904640" first="Dylan" last="Williamson"] | Guard | Good Counsel (MD)

Wilson: I think Good Counsel will go as far as Williamson can take him. I am predicting Williamson to be a 1st Team WCAC member this year as he will be the ultimate leader for a hard-playing Good Counsel team that will be sneaky good in the WCAC this year.

[player_tooltip player_id="777095" first="Bryce" last="Lindsay"] | Guard | St. Frances (MD)

Giacubeno: Lindsay’s transfer to St. Frances was noteworthy because of the elite long-range shooting he brings to an already loaded backcourt. Next to 2023 Jahn Lamothe, the duo will form the deadliest three-point shooting tandem in the area. Lindsay will not only space the floor but also bring some playmaking from the lead guard position.

[player_tooltip player_id="777071" first="Christian" last="Winborne"] | Guard | Gilman (MD)

Giacubeno: There’s little doubt in my mind that Winborne will have a ridiculous stat line when his senior season ends. Gilman has some underrated pieces on their roster, but whether or not they’ll be able to win some games in a highly competitive MIAA Conference will rest on Winborne’s shoulders. The St. Joseph’s pledge is one of the more dynamic scoring guards that you’ll find in the state and as he begins the process of preparing to play the point guard position at the next level, expect Winborne to be determined in creating opportunities for those around him and rack up assists.

[player_tooltip player_id="904648" first="Gavin" last="Walsh"] | Forward | Loyola (MD)

Giacubeno: Walsh’s return to Loyola was major for the Dons given their lack of true size in the frontcourt. At 6-foot-7, Walsh brings versatility offensively given his ability to score off the catch from three, off of one or two dribbles in the mid-range, and take advantage of mismatches in the post. The Dons are a part of the group of teams in the MIAA and BCL that will battle it out behind the top five, but Walsh could be the reason they pull off an upset or two along the way.

[player_tooltip player_id="904630" first="Jerrell" last="Roberson"] | Center | DeMatha (MD)

Ayalew: [player_tooltip player_id="957032" first="Jason" last="Moore"]’s decision not to play basketball this year means a more crucial role for Roberson as the Stags anchor. He looks physically capable to handle the task. Roberson has grown into his body and based on what we’ve seen in recent months has been playing his best basketball. Double-doubles could become the new norm for him this season.
