Continue ReadingThe 2021 Competitive Edge High School Fall League tipped off this past weekend. The basketball action wasn’t always eye pleasing as most of the players are working the August rust off their full court games. Still, the start of intense, 5on5 varsity action out in King of Prussia was a welcome event for prospects and hoops heads in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Below is a list of prospects who played well during the first Saturday of action in the Competitive Edge High School Fall League.
JP Baron JP Baron 6'2" | CG Pope John Paul II | 2022 State PA – 6’2” / Senior / Pope John Paul II / Power Forward: Baron is a combo-guard who can score at all 3 levels, but on Saturday he did most of his damage from behind the arc. Baron knocked down 5 threes on his way to 28 points and made it look easy. When Baron wasn’t scoring the ball, his high basketball IQ and excellent court vision enabled him to get his teammates involved.
Cole Hargrove Cole Hargrove 6'8" | SF Methacton | 2022 State PA – 6’7” / Senior / Methacton / Power Forward: Together with guard Brett Byrne Brett Byrne 6'1" | CG Methacton | 2022 State PA (who also looked good on Saturday), Hargrove will be asked to carry the scoring load this fall and winter for Methacton. This past Saturday Hargrove showed he is more than ready for that challenge. Hargrove did an excellent job of establishing position and then using his great footwork as well as his physical nature to finish through contact. His workhorse nature on the glass was very impressive as well. Hargrove flashed the ability to hit mid-range and baseline Js. If that skill set develops further, Hargrove will be a real problem for opponents. Holds offers from St. Peter’s and Drexel.
Jackson Hicke Jackson Hicke 6'5" | SF Radnor | 2023 State PA – 6’4 / Junior / Radnor / Wing: Hicke comes with a reputation as a scoring wing who can get buckets off the dribble or via the three ball. On Saturday he further solidified that rep by scoring 40 points on 8/14 shooting from deep. Hicke also displayed his versatility on Saturday. Radnor was without starting point guard Danny Rosenblum Danny Rosenblum 6'0" | PG Radnor | 2023 State PA , so Hicke received extensive minutes running as the lead guard. He did a more than respectable job in that role.
Adam Mahtat Adam Mahtat 6'5" | PF Council Rock North | 2023 State PA – 6’5” / Junior / Council Rock North / Power Forward: Mahtat projects as a stretch-4 prospect who will be a very effective scorer at the next level. The base of his offensive skill set is a polished back to the basket game and the ability to convert offensive rebounds into points. However, he compliments those interior skills with the ability to hit threes. On Saturday he knocked down 3 three pointers (all in the second half) on his way to 16 points overall. Mahtat also brings the energy / hustle factor for his team and is an active defender.
Zavier Mayo Zavier Mayo 6'4" | CG Phoenixville | 2022 State PA – 6‘4” / Senior / Phoenixville / Como Guard: Mayo is a long athlete who is much quicker than he appears in warmups. As the focus of Phoenixville’s perimeter attack, Mayo receives minutes at both guard spots. With his size, Mayo is a real matchup problem. Opposing coaches who attempt to guard Mayo with a big will quickly learn he is too quick to be defended by an interior player. Those who choose to defend Mayo with a guard will soon realize this versatile prospect can shoot/score over most backcourt players.
