Filling Big Shoes
There were some big time players who graduated this past season. Here are some notable players in the class of 2024 who will attempt to fill the shoes of graduates like Derrick Tezeno Derrick Tezeno 6'5" | SF North Central | 2021 State LA and Carter Domingue Carter Domingue 6'3" | PG St. Thomas More | 2021 State LA .
Jamal Smith Jamal Smith 6'2" | SG L.B. Landry | 2024 State LA (St. Augustine) – St. Augustine lost an abundance of senior talent from their state championship especially at the guard position. Look for Duncan to be the primary guard to help the Purple Knights to repeat as champions.
Greg Manning Greg Manning 5'6" | PG Benton | 2024 State LA (Benton) – After he leaves the football field, he will be the leader of a team who lost two four year starters in the backcourt. Manning will be looked to for scoring, assists, and high caliber defense.
Lionel Bell Lionel Bell 6'8" | PF BTW-New Orleans | 2024 State LA (BTW-N.O.) – With Kyran Ratliff in Arizona, Bell will have to provide an inside presence for the Lions. While they have some capable scoring on the perimeter, Bell holding down the paint will be significant.
Rondae Hill Rondae Hill 6'0" | PG Calvary Baptist | 2024 State LA (Calvary Baptist) – Hill got plenty of run being the Cavs 6th man. Stepping into the starting guard position after the season Daniel Ortiz Daniel Ortiz 6'1" | CG Calvary Baptist | 2021 State LA had is a big ask though. He will definitely have plenty of opportunities.
McKennis Savoie McKennis Savoie 6'2" | CG North Central | 2024 State LA (North Central) – Savoie will be part of the “Big 3” the Hurricanes have this season. Of course a big part of their scoring and athelticism left when Tezeno graduated. Savoie is very talented and should make up for some of that lost production.
Michael Mouton Michael Mouton 6'5" | SG St. Thomas More | 2024 State LA & Hays Regard Hays Regard 6'4" | SG St. Thomas More | 2024 State LA (St. Thomas More) – Nobody can replace the four year production of Domingue and Jaden Shelvin Jaden Shelvin 6'2" | CG St. Thomas More | 2021 State LA . These two talented sophomores will get a crack at it with a ton of minutes. It helps to have Danny Broussard as their coach, too.
Breakout Seasons
Hubert Caliste Hubert Caliste 6'6" | PF St. Augustine | 2024 State LA (St. Augustine) – Caliste had a big summer from scoring inside and outside last season and on the EYBL Circuit. He may command a lot of attention. He can put the ball in the basket so many ways however, it may not make a difference.
Jamarion Thomas Jamarion Thomas 6'0" | PG Live Oak | 2024 State LA (Live Oak) – Thomas may be one of the better point guards in his class and his district. For Live Oak to be ultra competitive, he is going to have to score. I think defenders will have a hard time stopping him from doing that.
Javon Johnson Javon Johnson 6'1" | CG Bossier | 2024 State LA (Bossier) – The Bossier sophomore broke into the starting lineup late last season and found himself as the leading scorer on some nights for the Bearkats. He shot the lights out this summer which will make him even more of a threat this season.
Jordan Mathews Jordan Mathews 6'5" | SF Peabody | 2024 State LA (Peabody) – Historically Peabody has a post player who can command the inside. This season Mathews is that guy. He can score through contact, get it off the glass, and run the floor. Mathews will be a load for any team to stop this season.
The class of 2024 rankings are deep with talent. Look for more players to be added after the season begins in November. This should be a fun class to get to know during the coming season.
