The former Chaminade College Prep All-American helped lead Team USA to a gold medal at the Games of the 32nd Olympiad in Tokyo, Japan. Tatum scored 19 points to help the USA to an 87-82 victory over France in the gold medal game. He also grabbed seven rebounds in his 21 minutes of action as he hit eight of 14 from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers.
In his first appearance with the USA men’s Olympic team, Tatum enjoyed a big debut performance as he averaged 15.2 points, which was second to leading scorer Kevin Durant. He also averaged 3.3 rebounds while shooting 49 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3-point range.
Tatum joins a list of players from the state of Missouri who won Olympic gold in basketball that includes, Jon Koncak (Kansas City) and Joe Kleine (Slater) in 1984, Jo Jo White (St. Louis) and Don Dee (Kansas City) in 1968, Bill Bradley (Crystal City) and Pete McCaffrey (Kansas City) in 1964, Dan Pippin (Waynesville) in 1952, Bob Kurland (Jennings) and Kenny Rollins (Charleston) in 1948.
