And while more than 90+ teams came through the doors of LakePoint Sports Complex in Cartersville, Georgia, only 1 team from each division was able to take home the title of Prep Hoops Passion Region Passion Region Champions!Â
As the best basketball state in the nation (no bias here, I promise), you know Florida was very well represented! So, here are some of the early standouts from the weekend:
Isaiah Oquendo, 6’2″, Lake Nona Basketball Academy, 2022
Oquendo continued to dazzle as he has all July. The 6’2″ guard has a bag of tricks that puzzled defenders all weekend. He has a tight handle with a collection of combo moves that made getting downhill very easy for him. 3-point shooting was no issue for him as well, and he could get to his spots in the mid-range and punish defenses. This 3-level scoring approach was effective against even the best of defenses, proving that his offensive versatility was able to scale up to tougher competition. Oquendo was the rock behind Lake Nona’s solid offensive game and should turn some heads this upcoming winter.
Machli Fleurissant, 6’2″, Palm Beach Flames, 2022
Machli was one of the standout shooters of the weekend. The Palm Beach Flames guard was able to light up from pretty much anywhere across the half court, and nailed 7 threes in a game during the first day of competition. However, his game is not one dimensional. He’s a solid on-ball defender and has a shifty handle that helped him get downhill and into the teeth of the defense. His composure and skill at his position gives this hooper the edge and led Palm Beach Flames to an Elite 8 appearance.Â
Turuk Rundial, 6’7″, Florida Sharks, 2022
Rundial’s size in the low post made him leave defenses scratching their heads. His 6’7″ frame and football player build was enough for him to bully defenders around the rim. However, it wasn’t just his size that made him a threat, but his soft touch on the offensive end. He has great footwork and instincts to put the ball in the basket. He can hurt you with post moves and a feathery touch around the cup. The ability to bury you in the basket and dance around you with his clever moves makes Rundial a tough matchup for virtually any big man.Â
Kamrin Oriol Kamrin Oriol 6'2" | PG Admiral Farragut | 2022 State FL , 6’2″, Dream Nation, 2022
Oriol has been a bucket every time I’ve watched his this July. He is a strong-bodied guard with a college-ready build, giving him the tools necessary to get downhill and punish defenses. He also has a consistent perimeter shot and can score in a variety of ways within the 3-point line. He’s a complete offensive package with a complete body that looks ready for a chance at the next level. College coaches should begin to contact this guy if they want someone who can get them a bucket whenever necessary.Â
