Las Vegas, ND – The North Dakota Phenom 16U team flew out to Las Vegas for the Fantastic 40, The Circuit Championship. The majority of the games were played at Tarkanian Basketball Academy. The 16U team went 5-1 and won the Championship. What a show for the North Dakota kids! For the most part, this team was made up of its original players except for two pickups.

Anthony showed the ability to defend at a high level, while also showing that he can score from almost any spot on the floor. Post up, check. Slash to the rim, check. Mid range, check. Step back, check. Deep 3, check. Anthony is a very high level shot maker and that was completely on display the entire weekend. In his 3 win or go home tournament games, Anthony averaged 17 points per game shooting 13-20 (65%) from 2 and 8-20 (40%) from 3. While Anthony scores the ball at a high clip, I do not think that his ability to pass the ball, guard, and force turnovers is talked about enough. Anthony averaged 3 steals in the 3 win or go home tournament games and did a great job as an on ball and help defender.

Tyler did a great job of being solid throughout the course of the weekend. He takes care of the basketball and puts in work defensively. He may lack overall size as a basketball player, but despite that, he does a great job in limiting dribble penetration. Offensively, he is operating at a 4 to 1 assist to turnover ratio. The biggest things that stand out about Tyler are that he takes care of the basketball, runs the team, and works defensively. He is instrumental to Phenom’s success.

Jaxon is a guy you love to have on your team and you hate to play against. He will sacrifice his body on a possession to possession basis. He will play through an injury. He will be a primary scorer, a primary facilitator, a slasher, a lockdown defender, or anything else the team needs on a game to game or possession to possession basis. His 3 game win or go home tournament stats may not stand out to the casual observer, but anyone who watches the team or Jaxon play immediately sees his value. Jaxon is a rare player who has the ability to score, but can dominate a game without scoring. In his 3 win or go home tournament games, Jaxon averaged 5.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1 block, and 3.7 steals. He did show his ability to score where he had 15 points in the tournament opener. He is a tremendous on ball defender and does a very good job of keeping everyone involved offensively and engaged defensively. In his 3rd season of 16u basketball, Jaxon has proven that he is a true primary facilitator and defensive anchor and he does both of these at a very high level.

Ryan showed this weekend that he can guard the basketball. He did a tremendous job in the championship game against a 6’9” point forward who holds 7 Division 1 offers. Ryan has the ability to score on the block, from the mid range, picking and rolling, picking and popping, off the bounce, or as a catch and shoot guy. He displayed all of this offensive ability, plus his ability to pass this weekend. Additionally, wow can Ryan rebound the basketball. On a team featuring some other high caliber rebounders, in his 3 win or go home tournament games, Ryan averaged 8.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 13 points. Ryan really showed his ability to do a lot of things, and a lot of things well this weekend.

Carson was a force on the glass. In the 3 win or go home tournament games, Carson averaged 8.7 points and 9.7 rebounds. I cannot overstate how impressive he was defensively and on the glass. Carson has shown his ability to shoot the entire season, but this focus on defense and rebounding can take him to another level as a player. Carson was able to successfully defend up and down the line up and showed great switchability. Carson also does a tremendous job of forcing contested jump shots from guards and wings and is a stout defender in the post. He had multiple high flying finishes over the weekend as well.

Darik was an efficient offensive force the entire event. In the 3 win or go home tournament games, Darik shot a ridiculous 29-36 (80.5%) from 2, 1-3 from 3, and 6-8 (75%) from the FT line for 22.3 points per game along with 6.7 rebounds per game and unreal defensive communication and effort and WOW did Darik have himself a weekend. Darik has a special ability to make multiple defensive efforts in the same possession to force turnovers and tough shots. He had numerous deflections and took a key charge in the championship. His ability to get himself open without the basketball is pretty special. Darik is electrifying in the open floor and had many big time finishes with both 1 and 2 hands.

Maddox did a nice job providing energy off the bench. He was able to find ways to be a bit disruptive defensively and he did a nice job contesting shots. Maddox does a great job of playing as hard as he can at all times.

Bryer brought good defensive energy the entire event. He did a nice job of walling off and contesting against initial penetration and racked up several blocked shots over the course of the weekend. Bryer did a nice job of putting himself in position to catch and dunk as well.

Ryan really showed his ability to score in our first game. He does a nice job of finishing through contact and can knock down perimeter shots at a nice clip. He also showed some good ability to slide laterally and contest and at times just outright block the shot of a guard trying to take him off the bounce.
