These are players who might not be established stars. They might not have even been one of the top options on their high school team. But they took big steps forward this summer and demonstrated what they can do against high-level competition.
Top Summer Risers, 2022 – First Team:
Jameer Clemons Jameer Clemons 5'10" | CG Derby | 2022 State KS , 5-foot-10 guard, Midwest Magic Elite, Derby HS:
Clemons hasn’t established himself as a headliner at Derby yet. But on the summer circuit, he stood out for his athleticism and versatility at the guard spot. For Midwest Magic Elite, he made a remarkable number of plays around the rim for a 5-foot-10 guy. He is a solid ball handler who can create, as well as play the steady quarterback role. He scored, defended and led effectively this summer.
Joby Love, 6-foot-1 guard, Kansas Players, Maize South HS:
Love hasn’t found his place yet on the high school scene, but man did he get after it at some summer tournaments for the Kansas Players. Love takes so much pride in his defense, he completely demoralizes opposing guards and thwarts offenses before they can get running. He is an in-your-face defender with the kind of length, quickness and anticipation needed to play that style. He can get into the lane and create opportunities on the offensive end too.
Trent Parke Trent Parke 6'1" | CG Derby | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-2 guard, Midwest Magic Elite, Derby HS (pictured):
It’s no coincidence that two Derby guards are on the ‘risers’ list. The Panthers are so guard-rich there just weren’t enough minutes for everyone last year. Like Clemons, Parke is looking to carve out a bigger role on the varsity, but he showed a ton on the summer circuit. He’s a solid ball handler and distributor who can push the tempo and occasionally create his own shot. He also plays opportunistic defense, particularly when passes hang in the air.
Jack Ryan, 6-foot-1 guard, Showtime, Lawrence HS:
Ryan isn’t exactly unknown on the varsity level. He was a key player for the Lions’ who rode Zeke Mayo Zeke Mayo 6'4" | CG Lawrence | 2021 State KS on a deep playoff run. But with Mayo gone, Ryan will be one of the returners expected to take another step this year. He got a lot of good experience as the number one option for Showtime. Ryan is a lanky athlete who can play several spots on the floor. He knocks down outside shots, handles the ball, and is smart at both ends.
Aiden Sutter, 6-foot-3 forward, Kansas Players, Campus HS:
Campus had stars last year. They needed role players. Sutter provided 4.4 points and 2.6 rebounds as a junior. With the loss of three key graduates, Sutter will be ready for a bigger role. He can score in the midrange, catch and shoot from deep, put the ball on the floor, and post up. He’s a tough guy who can compete with the bigs in the lane.
