The So Cal Summer Hoop Review was an NCAA live period event that was held July 8-11 at Ladera Sports Center in Ladera Ranch. This is a report on prospects at the event that we were able to personally observed/evaluate in the 17U Division that caught our attention.

Top Prospects:

6’3 W [player_tooltip player_id="947683" first="Jadan" last="Adams"] of Monterey HS (CA) 2021 (Seaside’s Finest 17U)

Adams is a player who has a pretty complete all-around game. He has solid ball-handling and passing skills in addition to being a versatile scorer from all three levels (perimeter, mid-range, at the rim). He moves well without the ball, and he is also a capable rebounder.

6’5 SF Ramon Bailey of Clayton Valley Charter HS (CA) 2022 (Concord Eagles)

Bailey is an impressive wing who brings a lot to the table offensively. He’s a confident handler and a good passer who can find the open man. His strength is his ability to drive to the hoop. He is an ok 3-point shooter, and he has a decent floater. He’s also a solid rebounder.

6’0 CG [player_tooltip player_id="1118939" first="Cade" last="Bennett"] of Campolindo HS (CA) 2022 (Team GRR)

Bennett is an elite competitor who makes a ton of effort plays at both ends. His work ethic is infectious for a team. He’s a combo guard who is very confident and has a high IQ. He makes plays for himself and his teammates consistently. He’s developed into a solid perimeter shooter and has always been a nice driver with a sneaky first step. You could file harassment charges against him for the way he plays at the defensive end.

6’5 SF [player_tooltip player_id="775792" first="Emmanuel" last="Callas"] of Campolindo HS (CA) 2021 (Team GRR)

If you look up tough in the dictionary, you might see a picture of [player_tooltip player_id="775792" first="Emmanuel" last="Callas"]. Furthermore, “he got skills,” as the saying goes. He is a big-time driver, passer, and rebounder. His perimeter shot is more than adequate. And he is a relentless competitor who brings it on every possession at both ends. It is a real mystery why he has not gotten more attention on the recruiting scene. But if you are a college coach that is still looking, you definitely need to check on this guy.

6’3 CG Craig Comanche of Cheyenne HS (NV) 2021 (The Program LV)

Comanche is an energetic and athletic combo guard who makes things happen. He finishes well in transition consistently. He can score in different ways with the drive, mid-range pull-up, and a floater. He does need to prove himself as a perimeter shooter. But he is a solid prospect for the next level.

6’3 SG Sawyer Cottrell of Davis HS (UT) 2022 (Salt Lake Metro Black)

Cottrell is a hard-working shooting guard who maxes out what he has. He combines effort and intelligence to be a very productive player. He runs the floor hard on every possession and sees the floor well in transition when he handles it. He is a money shooter with 3-range who is effective at catch and shoot. He’s a very smart help defender and a good rebounder. He’s definitely a good one to have on your side.

6’5 SF [player_tooltip player_id="766845" first="Jeremiah" last="Dargan"] of Clayton Valley Charter HS (CA) 2022 (Concord Eagles)

Dargan is a long and fairly athletic wing who is an accomplished scorer. He finds ways to get to the basket on the drive pretty consistently. He does a nice job moving without the ball. His outside shot needs some polish, but he can knock them down when he has time. Will play Division I basketball- just a question of what level.

5’10 PG [player_tooltip player_id="775746" first="Jacob" last="Ebert"] of Cornerstone Christian School (CA) 2021 (NorCal Prep Elite 17U)

Ebert continues to impress with his play and to demonstrate that he is very under-recruited. He’s an athletic and energetic one-man who can really turn on the jets on the break with the nice burst he has. He finishes well in transition, and he has a real nice pull-up in the half-court. He beats defenders on the drive consistently, and he shoots it well with 3 range.

5’7 PG Omare Edwards of Fortune Early College (CA) 2022 (YBA Elite Rize 2022)

Edwards is an athlete with a capital A who can really fly. He’s a solid handler who pushes the break consistently. He is a fairly good 3-point shooter, and his exceptional burst allows him to get to the basket on the drive consistently. Significantly, he has a really nice motor.

6’1 CG Taiga Jones of Keio University (Japan)2021 (Toyoko Samurai 17)

Jones had a splendid all-around performance and put himself firmly on the radar. He does a nice job pushing the envelope on the fast break. He sees the floor and makes a ton of plays. He has a high IQ and has a knack for making the right play at the right time. He is very effective in pick-and-roll situations, and he can shoot with range. He is also a solid defender who makes things difficult for the opponent. Best of all, he has a motor that is always running.

6’8 C Dylan Hoyt of Viewpoint HS (CA) 2022 (BTI Prospect 17U)

Hoyt is an active five-man who runs well and has lift. He can make plays above the rim. He has a hard-to-guard jump hook as his go-to move. He can also pass, shoot (3 range) and rebound. Real nice-looking prospect.

6’3 SG [player_tooltip player_id="1111485" first="Tyler" last="Isaak"] of San Ramon Valley HS (CA) 2022 (Team GRR)

Isaak “showed out” in a very consistent way at this event, helping his team go 8-0. He is a very solid all-around shooting guard who contributes in multiple ways. He can pass, drive and shoot. And he is a real good rebounder from the guard position. He is also a real competitor. About the only thing missing is that he needs to be more vocal on the court.

6’3 SG Alan Kane of Balboa School (CA) 2022 (Gamepoint 17 Supreme)

Kane is an athletic two-guard with an impressive all-around skill set. He’s real effective making plays in transition with the ability to pull up or go all the way and finish. He has a set shot, but he can knock them down with range, and he has a clever floater. He’s also a solid driver who can break down defenders one on one.

6’6 PF Joey Kennedy of University HS (CA) 2023 (Bay City Warriors 17 RB)

Kennedy is an aggressive and skilled four-man who gets a lot of things done. He scores inside with a solid post-up game, and he shoots it fairly well from the perimeter (3 range). He is a solid rebounder who outlets the ball well to initiate the fast break.

5’11 PG Sasaki Kyoya of Moriokashiritsu School (Japan) 2022 (Toyoko Samurai 17)

Kyoya got some attention as a bonafide competitor with some skills. He plays with focus and purpose, and he makes plays for himself and his teammates consistently. He is an excellent passer who can ignite a team in that regard. He has a high IQ and makes good decisions. And he creates havoc as an on-ball defender at the other end.

6’2 CG Manson Lee of Sabino HS (AZ) 2022 (Ascending Life Saints)

Lee is an athletic combo guard who makes a lot of plays in transition. He has solid ball-handling and passing skills, and he consistently attacks. He has the ability to play on and off the ball, and he shoots it fairly well with 3 range. Also, an elite student.

6’2 CG Keshawn Mc Neill of Zama American Middle HS (Japan)2022 (Toyoko Samurai 17)

Mc Neill had a solid performance at this event as he showed an impressive all-around game. He has the ability to score from all three levels with the perimeter shot, the drive, and the mid-range pull-up. He’s a good passer who can create opportunities for his teammates as well, both in transition and in the half-court. Best of all, he plays in attack mode and will keep coming at you.

6’0 PG Omari Nesbit of Burbank HS (CA) 2022 (YBA Elite Rize 2022)

Nesbit is an excellent athletic with speed to burn who excels in transition in a number of ways. He’s a good passer who finds the open man, he can pull up, and he can finish. He has a nice mid-range game in the half-court, and he is a consistent driver/penetrator. He probably does need to prove himself as a perimeter shooter. He can also create havoc as an on-ball defender.

6’4 G/W [player_tooltip player_id="775790" first="Niyi" last="Olabode"] of Miramonte HS (CA) 2021 (Team GRR)

Olabode really turned heads with his performance and had a bunch of college coaches asking, “who is that guy?”… He’s a real athletic guard/wing who impacts the game at both ends of the floor. He’s really good breaking down defenders and getting to the hoop on the drive. He consistently scores in transition as well. His mid-range pull-up game is superior. He does need to show more consistency as a perimeter shooter. Also, he is an impressive on-ball defender and can guard multiple positions. If there is a rising stock team, he is definitely on it based on this event. D 1 coaches take note…

6’3 G/W Logan Prince of West Jordan HS (UT) 2022 (Salt Lake Metro Black)

Prince is a guard/wing who is a decent athlete with a solid skillset. He runs well and never stops running. He can handle it confidently, he moves ok without it, he shoots it well with long-range, and he gets to the hoop on the drive. He can be a difficult matchup for the opponent.

6’4 CG [player_tooltip player_id="748777" first="RJ" last="Smith"] of Damien HS (CA) 2022

Smith is a very impressive combo guard who creates a lot of problems for the opponent. He’s a very smooth ball handler who is very effective in transition-with the ability to pull up or finish. He is a good passer who will find the open man. He’s a good shooter with range (catch and shoots), and he gets to the basket on the drive consistently. He is very competent in both the roles of facilitator and scorer. Sure-fire D 1 prospect.

6’7 P/FC Nygle Williams of Woodbridge HS (CA) 2022 (BTI Prospect 17U)

Williams is an athletic and active combo post-man with long arms. He can impact the game at both ends. He can dribble operate and do damage on the block offensively. He is a good rebounder who is very active on the glass at both ends. And he is a capable shot blocker defensively.

6’0 CG Spivey Word of Damien HS (CA) 2022

Word was a nice revelation at this event and showed he belongs on the 2022 radar. He’s an athletic combo guard with nice burst. He goes hard in transition and makes a lot of plays. He shoots it fairly well with 3-range, and he’s a real good driver who gets by defender with an impressive first step. He’s also a solid on-ball defender. Remember the name- he will be heard from.

6’1 SG David Vuillemin of Murrieta Mesa HS (CA) 2022

Vuillemin is a versatile shooting guard who has a nice offensive package. He’s a confident handler who has a very effective pull-up game- both in transition and in the half-court. He moves very well without the ball, and he is a good shooter with long-range.

Other Prospects to Consider: (*indicates highest consideration)

*6’4 SF/PF Manson Bamberger of Clayton Valley Charter HS (CA) 2022 (Concord Eagles)

Average athlete, physical, moves ok without the ball, passes it well, decent/ok shooter with 3 range, a real hustler who makes effort plays.

6’5 PF Brady Baumgartner of Canyon HS (CA) 2022 (Crush)

Big body, works hard, sets a mean screen, finds ways to score inside and out. He maximizes what he has. Elite student.

6’7 C Brandyn Benhard of Foothill HS (CA) 2022

Runs fairly well, has an ok one-bounce drive, solid mini jump hook, consistent rebounder.

6’0 PG Brandon Blair of St. John Bosco HS (CA) 2022 (BTI Prep Stars 17U)

Athletic, has acceleration, handles it well, finishes in transition, pulls up in the half-court, shoots it ok with 3 range.

6’3 G/P [player_tooltip player_id="745448" first="Brian" last="Brown"] of CSA Academy (CA) 2021 (Cali Elite 17)

Average athlete, big body (needs a better body), real good passer, can face-up drive, ok shooter with 3-point range.

6’0 SG Erick Chaney of Bakersfield Christian HS (CA) 2022 (Cali Rebels 17U Select)

Ok athlete, capable handler, has a mid-range pull-up, shoots it well with 3 range.

*6’3 G/W Justice Chase of Manteca HS (CA) 2022 (Port City Elite 17U)

He can handle and pass, decent shooter with 3 range, ok driver, has a hesitation move, posts up a little, works hard on defense, good rebounder, does compete.

6’0 PG Elijah Cirilo of CSA Academy (CA) 2020 (Cali Elite 17)

Very good athlete, has burst, handles it, passes it well, finishes well in transition, can go coast to coast, has mid-range pull-up, nice floater, has a good feel.

6’1 CG Malik Cotta of Lincoln HS (CA) 2021 (Port City Elite 17U)

Ok athlete, strong, passes it well, finishes with contact on the drive, ok rebounder, does compete.

*6’5 SF/PF Kyrian Davis of Independence HS (CA) 2022 (Crush)

Strong, active, versatile scorer, capable rebounder.
