Continue ReadingGood morning! We are heading right back to the Indiana Convention Center very shortly to get the second day of Prep Hoops 2K21 underway, but first let’s take a look back at all of the happenings from day one. Last night, we posted top performers from Indiana’s Class of 2022 so make sure to check that out as well. Let’s dump out the notebook from day one and then turn the page to Saturday’s action!
Ryan Conwell Ryan Conwell 6'2" | SG Pike | 2022 State #155 Nation IN Steals the Show
It has been the summer of 6’3″ guard Ryan Conwell Ryan Conwell 6'2" | SG Pike | 2022 State #155 Nation IN (Pike H.S. 2022/EG10 2022). As recently as June’s Top 100 workout, the lefty scorer did not hold a Division I offer. Now, Conwell is one of the most sought after recruits in the state as the mid-majors are coming out of the woodwork to compete for his services.
Friday night in front of 30+ college coaches, Conwell poured in 27 points on the way to leading EG10 2022 to a hard-fought victory over a very talented Minnesota Fury 2022 Wilde team. Conwell shot it very well from beyond the arc while still breaking down defenders off the dribble as usual.
EG10 would go on to defeat Minnesota Fury 65-57.
Virginia Tech assistant coach Christian Webster was among the coaches lined up to watch Pike’s star guard at the Indiana Convention Center and after witnessing Conwell go for 27 points the Hokies pulled the trigger with an offer. Having now broken into the high-major ranks, you can expect that this won’t be the last scholarship from a major conference school to come his way.
Overtime Thrillers
Indiana Game’s two top teams, Premier and Blue, won exciting overtime contests Friday night. Indiana Game Premier got it done 67-64 over Minnesota Heat 2022 Grow while Indiana Game Blue came through with an 86-79 victory against D.F. Elite 2022 in the nightcap.
For Premier, Jaron Crews Jaron Crews 6'1" | PG Ankeny Centennial | 2021 State IA (Don Bosco Prep 2022) was excellent in the first half breaking the defense down off of the dribble. The Iowa native who graduated from Ankeny Centennial High School recently announced he would reclassify to the Class of 2022 and attend Don Bosco Prep here in Indiana. The move to 2022 will make the 6’1″ point guard a nice prospect to track over the coming year.
Late in the game, Drew Adzia Drew Adzia 5'9" | PG Crown Point | 2022 State IN (Crown Point H.S. 2022) stepped up making a couple of nice plays off of the dribble including the game-tying layup with 11.6 seconds left to send the game to overtime. 6’6″ forward Kaleo Kakalia Kaleo Kakalia 6'6" | PF Mishawaka Marian | 2022 State IN (Mishawaka Marian H.S. 2022) was his normal active self as well making some big plays down the stretch.
The Indiana Game Blue matchup was dominated by Matt Zdanowicz Matt Zdanowicz 6'2" | SG Crown Point | 2022 IN (Crown Point H.S. 2022). The long, 6’3″ wing scored 36 points in the game to will his team to the overtime win. Zdanowicz’s high school backcourt mate, Carter Delich (Crown Point H.S. 2022) was effective scoring the basketball as well.
High Level In-State 2023 Matchups
I got the opportunity to watch two different clashes between Indiana Class of 2023 teams, Indiana Game Premier vs. D1 Indiana and Indiana Ice Gold vs. 94 Feet Elite.
Indiana Game got the best of D1 Indiana 68-63 in a hard fought game. Marcus Northern Marcus Northern 6'2" | PG South Bend Washington | 2023 State IN (South Bend Washington H.S. 2023) continued his strong play in the month of July, but it was the 2-man game between 6’4″ guard A.J. Lux A.J. Lux 6'3" | SG Crown Point | 2023 State IN (Crown Point H.S. 2023) and 6’5″ forward Brandon Trilli Brandon Trilli 6'5" | SF Munster | 2023 State IN (Munster H.S. 2023) that really dominated the game. Lux was his normal sharp-shooting self from beyond the arc while Trilli has proved himself to be a force around the basket since moving in from Arizona.
In the loss, Joshua Mickens Joshua Mickens 6'4" | PF Lawrence Central | 2023 State IN (Lawrence Central H.S. 2023) and Nathaniel Matelic (Speedway H.S. 2023) played well for D1 Indiana. Mickens, a 6’5″ forward, is an athletic, strong left-hander that made a number of plays off the dribble and in the post in the second half to keep D1 Indiana hanging around. Matelic is a long 6’4″ guard that showed off a sweet shooting stroke and effective mid-range game.
In the matchup between Indiana Ice Gold and 94 Feet Elite, Kamari Slaughter Kamari Slaughter 6'2" | SG Cathedral | 2023 State IN (Portage H.S. 2023) was just too much to handle off of the dribble and was able to lead 94 Feet to a 62-57 victory. Slaughter scored 21 points to lead all scorers as the 6’4″ guard just couldn’t be stopped on his way to the rim. He was able to win the battle this time against another super tough, similarly talented 6’3″ guard for Indiana Ice Gold in Jordan Woods Jordan Woods 6'2" | PG Hammond Central | 2023 State IN (Hammond H.S. 2023) who scored 12 points in the loss.
The Reed Sheppard Reed Sheppard 6'3" | PG North Laurel | 2023 State #22 Nation KY Show Comes to Indiana
The son of former Kentucky Wildcat great Jeff Sheppard, Reed Sheppard Reed Sheppard 6'3" | PG North Laurel | 2023 State #22 Nation KY has certainly made a name for himself down in the state of Kentucky. After recently earning an offer from Coach John Calipari and the ‘Cats, Sheppard’s status as a cult hero in the Bluegrass State has only continued to grow. Basketball fans in Indiana were treated to the show on Friday night at the Indiana Convention Center as college coaches and spectators crowded the court to watch him play with his Midwest Basketball Club 2022 Adidas 3SSB squad.
Sheppard led Midwest Basketball Club to a pair of victories over Team Loaded North Carolina and Mass Rivals including going for 27 points in the win over Team Loaded N.C.
Shilo Jackson Vincennes University Offer
A Class of 2021 graduate from North Central High School, 6’8″ forward Shilo Jackson has continued to play on the AAU circuit this summer for EG10 2022. Jackson continues to develop, and get taller, which has made him a late-bloomer of sorts that is only scratching the surface of his potential. After visiting the in-state Junior College, Vincennes extended an offer Friday afternoon and all reports indicate that Jackson will be playing there this coming season.
Jackson played very well in EG10’s win over Minnesota Fury. He is becoming an excellent rebounder that can really go up and get the ball. As his overall skill set develops, and he gets stronger, he will be one to track over the next couple of years for coaches at all levels.
